# The best family hotels in Amsterdam

Written 2026-10-02 by Play Day. Thirteen Amsterdam hotels that work with kids: where each sits, which have a pool, connecting rooms, suites or a kitchenette, and which room to ask for.

Picture it: a canal-house hotel with a gorgeous lobby, and a room the size of a closet with a staircase to get to it. Amsterdam is lovely and tight, so for anyone with kids the shortcut is to book the room first and the hotel second: a suite, two rooms that connect, or somewhere with a kitchenette.

The other thing is the neighbourhood. The center is walkable, but the museum quarter by Vondelpark is easier on little legs, and the east side is close to the zoo. Each section says which part of town you're in.

Short on time? A pool and a museum square: Mandarin Oriental. Connecting rooms and cribs by the station: Kimpton De Witt. A kitchenette by the park: Catalonia Vondel. A boat to sleep on: The July.

## How we picked

These are hotels we'd send a friend with two kids to. The facts under each one come from its Play Day listing. If a fact is missing, we couldn't confirm it (not that the answer is no).

Ask the hotel about cribs and extra beds before you book. It's a quick email and it settles the room.

## By Centraal and the old center

The airport train comes straight in, the free ferries to Noord leave from behind the station, and the old canal streets are a walk. It's busy, and it's the easy base for a short trip.

### [Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam](https://ourplayday.com/places/kimpton-de-witt-amsterdam-amsterdam)

Neighbourhood: Nieuwmarkt

The one with the most family boxes ticked: cribs, connecting rooms and suites are all listed. Book a connecting pair if you have two kids, or a suite if you want a living room to retreat to after bedtime.

It's a short walk to Centraal, so the airport train and the ferries are easy.

- Cribs: Yes
- Connecting rooms: Yes
- Suites: Yes

### [Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam](https://ourplayday.com/places/sofitel-legend-the-grand-amsterdam-amsterdam)

Neighbourhood: Old center

The splurge: a grand old hotel in the middle of the city, with connecting rooms and suites listed. It's the one to pick if the trip is a treat.

Ask about a crib when you book, since the listing doesn't say.

- Connecting rooms: Yes
- Suites: Yes

## Jordaan and the western canals

The Jordaan is the part of Amsterdam with narrow streets, cafés and a good playground. It's quieter than the center, and the Anne Frank House and Westerpark are close.

### [Pulitzer Amsterdam](https://ourplayday.com/places/pulitzer-amsterdam-amsterdam)

Neighbourhood: Jordaan

A hotel built from a row of canal houses, which means no two rooms are alike. Connecting rooms and suites are listed, and those are the ones to ask for.

Bring a carrier. Old canal-house buildings mean steps and narrow corridors.

- Connecting rooms: Yes
- Suites: Yes

### [Linden Hotel](https://ourplayday.com/places/linden-hotel-amsterdam)

Neighbourhood: Jordaan

A small hotel in the Jordaan with suites listed. The suite is the room to book if you're traveling with kids, since standard rooms here are compact.

De Noorderspeeltuin, a playground, is a short walk away.

- Suites: Yes

## Museum quarter and Vondelpark

The easiest part of town for kids. Vondelpark is the big green lung, and the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk's Family Lab are on one square.

### [Mandarin Oriental, Amsterdam](https://ourplayday.com/places/mandarin-oriental-conservatorium-amsterdam-amsterdam)

Neighbourhood: Museum quarter

The luxury pick, right on the museum square. A pool and connecting rooms are both listed, so it works for a family that wants space and a swim.

The museums are on your doorstep and Vondelpark is a few minutes away.

- Connecting rooms: Yes
- Pool: Yes, indoor

### [Catalonia Vondel Amsterdam](https://ourplayday.com/places/catalonia-vondel-amsterdam-amsterdam)

Neighbourhood: Vondelpark

A hotel by the park with suites and a kitchenette listed. The kitchenette is the draw: milk, snacks and a quick breakfast without going out.

Vondelpark is right there for the morning run.

- Suites: Yes
- Kitchenette: Yes

## By the Amstel and the south

Further from the canals, close to the river and the quieter streets. Take the tram or a taxi to get in.

### [InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam](https://ourplayday.com/places/intercontinental-amstel-amsterdam-amsterdam)

Neighbourhood: Amstel

A grand hotel on the river, with a pool and suites listed. It's a short ride to ARTIS, the zoo, which makes day two easy.

Ask about cribs, since the listing doesn't say.

- Suites: Yes
- Pool: Yes, indoor, heated

### [Hotel Okura Amsterdam](https://ourplayday.com/places/hotel-okura-amsterdam-amsterdam)

Neighbourhood: De Pijp

A big hotel by De Pijp, the lively neighborhood with cafés. A pool is listed. The facts on the other family basics are thin, so ask about room types and extra beds when you book.

- Pool: Yes, indoor

### [Van der Valk Hotel Amsterdam Amstel](https://ourplayday.com/places/van-der-valk-hotel-amsterdam-amstel-amsterdam)

Neighbourhood: South Amsterdam

A bigger hotel on the south edge, with a pool and suites listed. It's the best pick if you're driving, and the least convenient if you're not: you'll want a tram or train into the center.

Amstelpark's playground is nearby.

- Suites: Yes
- Pool: Yes

## East, north and the west edge

Quirkier places, a boat and a couple of out-of-the-way hotels. They suit anyone who's seen the center already.

### [The July - Boat & Co](https://ourplayday.com/places/the-july-boat-co-amsterdam)

Neighbourhood: Amsterdam West

A hotel on a boat. Suites and a kitchenette are listed, and kids tend to love sleeping on the water.

It's outside the center, so plan on a tram or a bike.

- Suites: Yes
- Kitchenette: Yes

### [Volkshotel](https://ourplayday.com/places/volkshotel-amsterdam)

Neighbourhood: East

A converted newspaper building in the east, near Oosterpark and a short ride from the zoo. The family facts aren't listed, so ask about room sizes before you book.

### [WestCord Art Hotel Amsterdam 4-star](https://ourplayday.com/places/westcord-art-hotel-amsterdam-4-star-amsterdam)

Neighbourhood: West

A hotel with a fridge in the room listed, which helps with milk and snacks. It's out on the west edge, so it's a base for people who don't mind a tram ride.

- Fridge: Yes

### [XO Hotels Park West](https://ourplayday.com/places/xo-hotels-park-west-amsterdam)

Neighbourhood: West

A hotel on the west side of the city, near the park. The listing has no family facts yet, so email them about room types and extra beds first.

## Pools, and who can use them

Mandarin Oriental, InterContinental Amstel, Hotel Okura and Van der Valk Amstel all have a pool listed. Check the hotel's page for who can use it and when, since rules for kids vary.

## Getting in from the airport

Trains from Schiphol run straight to Amsterdam Centraal, which puts the old-center hotels a short walk away. From there, trams cover the museum quarter and the Amstel. The ferries behind the station to Amsterdam Noord are free.
