# The best family hotels in Stockholm

Twelve Stockholm hotels that work with kids: a boutique hotel next to Gröna Lund, a garden island, family rooms by Central Station, a playground across the street and apartments with kitchens. See which ones have family rooms, connecting rooms, cribs or a kitchen before you book.

Picture it: you land at Arlanda, the kids slept for twenty minutes of the flight, and now you need a room that fits four people and a stroller. Here's the shortcut. Stockholm's hotel rooms run small, so the question isn't really which hotel, it's which room: a family room, two rooms that connect, or an apartment with a kitchen.

And a warning, since it catches people out every summer. A rooftop pool in the photos doesn't mean your kids can swim in it. Several of the city's best-known hotel pools sit inside spas with age limits, so we say for each hotel who can actually get in the water.

We sorted it by where you'll spend your days. Djurgården and Skeppsholmen put you on foot from Junibacken, the Vasa and Skansen. Norrmalm puts you by Central Station and the airport train. The apartments give you a kitchen and a second room, and a short ride in.

## How we picked

These are hotels we'd send a friend with two kids to. The facts under each one come from the hotel's own site (room pages, FAQ and spa rules) and its Play Day listing. Where a hotel's site wouldn't load, we used the text of its own page as it shows in search. If a fact is missing, we couldn't confirm it (not that the answer is no).

We left out hotels we couldn't get family facts for, however central or famous they are, and rooms that top out at two people (a lot of the old town's are tiny).

## Djurgården, Skeppsholmen and Strandvägen

Stay here if the trip is mostly Junibacken, the Vasa, Skansen and Gröna Lund, because you can walk to all of them. The Djurgården ferry links both islands to Slussen, and at night it's quiet in a way the center never is. What you give up: fewer restaurants on the doorstep once the museums close.

The walk-to-everything pick. It's in the same building as ABBA The Museum (connected by a corridor inside), next door to Gröna Lund, with Skansen and the Vasa a short walk away. Every room is decorated differently, and none of them is the beige box you were bracing for.

With two kids, ask for two loft rooms or two luxury rooms that connect, since some of each do. The Veranda Suite is the big one: two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, a lounge with a dining table and a private veranda. Breakfast is in the brasserie downstairs.

No pool. On a Gröna Lund summer evening you'll hear the concerts, which is either the downside or the point.

Neighborhood: Skeppsholmen

A small green island in the middle of the city, with the hotel's own garden and kitchen garden, and water on every side. Moderna Museet is next door and there are paths all around the island, so kids can run before breakfast without you crossing a single road.

The Djurgården ferry stops at Skeppsholmen on its way from Slussen, so Junibacken and the Vasa are one short boat ride away, and Gamla stan is a walk over the bridge.

Rooms are the catch. Most top out at three people, and the officer's suite is the one that sleeps four. With two kids, book that or two rooms.

Neighborhood: Östermalm

The splurge: a grand old hotel on Strandvägen, with the water across the street and the Djurgården bridge a short walk along it. The archipelago boats leave from right outside, if you want a day on the islands.

It's the one hotel here that plans for kids in the school holidays. Its family package has kids' meals, connecting rooms on request, a welcome gift for the smallest guests, baby carriers to borrow and babysitting. What's in it and which dates it runs are on the hotel's own offer page.

For a big group, one of the suites is set up for a large family, and the Executive Sea View Suite can connect to the room next door.

## Norrmalm, by Central Station

The practical choice. The Arlanda Express from the airport pulls into Central Station, the metro and buses go everywhere from here, and Kulturhuset's free kids' library is a few blocks away. It's busy and it's city, but on the last night before an early flight, you'll be glad you're here.

On Norra Bantorget, next to Central Station, with the Arlanda Express about eighteen minutes from the airport. That's the whole pitch after a long flight with tired kids.

The family rooms are the ones to book with kids, and the breakfast buffet has an omelette chef and gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options. Whether it's included depends on the rate.

About that heated rooftop pool: it belongs to Selma City Spa, costs extra, has to be booked ahead and is for 16 and up. Don't promise anyone a swim.

Directly across from Central Station, with the airport buses leaving from the terminal next door. If the Arlanda Express is how you're arriving, you can't get any closer.

Book the Superior Family room: it sleeps four, with a bunk bed the kids will fight over (so decide who gets the top one before you leave home). Several room types connect, too.

The fun lobby on Brunkebergstorg, a few minutes' walk from Central Station and Kulturhuset. Ping pong tables are on floors one to eight, and board games are handed out at the front desk, which fills the half hour before dinner nicely.

Traveling with grandparents or another family? You can book connecting rooms with a shared social space, for up to twelve people.

The rooftop pool is the catch. It's part of The Nest, the wellness floor, and it's for guests 16 and up, so it's for the grown-ups' evening, not the kids.

Right on Hötorget, where the fruit and flower stalls set up, and a short walk to Central Station and Kulturhuset.

Three kinds of room sleep four here: the Grande Double with a sofa bed, the Hay Junior Suite (which also connects to the next room) and the Hay Master Suite. Most rooms have a fridge, which matters more than you'd think for the milk.

## Östermalm and Södermalm

Two neighborhoods where people actually live, each a short metro ride from the sights. You get a playground across the street and dinner somewhere that isn't a hotel lobby.

It faces Humlegården, and the park's playground is across the street, which is the whole reason to pick it. One grown-up on coffee, one on the swings, and nobody has to cross town.

On Mariatorget, the leafy square in the middle of Södermalm, with a lot of good cafés right outside.

It's one of the few hotels here that says plainly what it does for babies: a cot for kids under four comes free, in the room categories that have space for one. Rooms have a fridge. Ask for a room that takes the cot when you book, since not every one does.

## Apartments and kitchenettes

Restaurant meals three times a day get old fast with small kids. These give you a kitchen (or a kitchenette) and more room, at the cost of a metro, tram or bus ride into the sights.

The kitchen pick. Studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, every one with a fully equipped kitchen, towels and linen. Book the two-bedroom and the kids go down while you stay up in a separate living room.

There's laundry you can book (sometimes for a fee), and breakfast, if you add it, comes in a bag delivered fresh each morning.

It's a newer waterside neighborhood just south of Södermalm, within walking distance of it, with the water right there for an evening stroll.

Neighborhood: Gärdet

The same idea as Hammarby Sjöstad (studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments, a full kitchen in every one), but on the Djurgården side of town. Tekniska museet and the museum island are within walking distance, and three bus lines stop at the door.

This one also has a breakfast buffet, if you'd rather not cook every morning. Kids under two stay free.

A regular hotel with the room you actually need: family rooms with a kitchenette and a sofa bed. Breakfast is included, and so is the sauna.

It's on Vanadisvägen in Vasastan, a residential part of town about 0.4 mi from Odenplan metro. Vasaparken's Peter and Petra playground is about a ten minute walk, and Hagaparken is close for a long run or a long stroller push.

## Pools, and who can use them

Stockholm hotel pools are mostly spa pools, and spas mostly have age limits. The rooftop pools at Downtown Camper and Clarion Hotel Sign are 16 and up, and so is the Grand Hôtel's spa pool. If a swim matters, spend a morning at Eriksdalsbadet, the city's big public pool, and take the pressure off the hotel.

## Which part of town

Djurgården, Skeppsholmen or Strandvägen, if the museum island is the trip and you'd rather walk than ride. Norrmalm, if you're flying in and out on the Arlanda Express or it's a short stay. Östermalm or Södermalm, if you want a neighborhood and a playground more than a view. An apartment, if you're staying longer than three nights or someone in the family is a picky eater.
