# Legoland California vs. Disneyland with a four-year-old

Written 2026-10-10 by Play Day. Legoland California or Disneyland with a four-year-old. Legoland is built for ages two to twelve and a four-year-old can do nearly all of it, and Disneyland has the castle and the characters. Rides by height, the water park and the drive between them.

Legoland California is built out of what your kid already plays with, and Disneyland is built out of what is already on the pajamas. Legoland is made for a four-year-old, and Disneyland is probably the park they've already heard of.

With a kid who builds with Duplo, our pick is Legoland California: a park for ages two to twelve. Disneyland is for the kid who wants the castle, and for the family where an older sibling needs the bigger rides.

The two are an hour apart on the I-5 (Legoland is in Carlsbad, north of San Diego), so it's usually one or the other on a trip. Legoland is calmer, and Disneyland is the long day most families do once.

## Legoland for a kid who builds

Park: Carlsbad

A four-year-old can do nearly every ride in the park. Junior Driving School is for ages three to five, so a four-year-old drives, and the big Driving School takes six to thirteen. Lost Kingdom Adventure takes a kid from 30 inches, Coastersaurus from 36 with an adult, and the Dragon coaster from 40 with an adult. Miniland is the whole West Coast in Lego (the adults get stuck there too), and building tables are everywhere for a tired kid.

It's a park you finish in a day, with time left for the hotel pool. The Legoland Hotel at the gate has Lego-themed rooms with a separate sleeping nook for the kids (a very big deal at four).

Park: Carlsbad

Next door to the theme park, with splash areas and slides sized for small kids, and a river where you build your own raft and float it down. Joker Soaker and the Imagination Station have no height line, the Build-A-Raft river is 42 inches, and the Duplo splash area is for the smallest. In summer a four-year-old can spend half the day here and half in the park.

- Water play: Yes

## Disneyland for a kid who knows the characters

### [Disneyland Park](https://ourplayday.com/places/disneyland-park-anaheim)

Park: Anaheim

At four, a kid rides all of Fantasyland and Toontown without a height check, meets the characters they know and watches the parade from a curb. Tiana's Bayou Adventure and Big Thunder are 40 inches, which a tall four-year-old clears. It's the bigger park in every way, with a lot more to see.

- Changing table: Yes
- Wheelchair access: Yes
