# The best playgrounds in San Diego

Written 2026-10-25 by Play Day. San Diego playgrounds by neighborhood, from Pepper Grove in Balboa Park to Tecolote Shores on Mission Bay, and which have a restroom, shade or water play.

San Diego has tons for kids outdoors, starting with the [San Diego Zoo](https://ourplayday.com/places/san-diego-zoo) and the museums around it in Balboa Park, and the best playgrounds sit right next to all of it. [Pepper Grove](https://ourplayday.com/places/pepper-grove-playground-san-diego) is just south of the [Fleet Science Center](https://ourplayday.com/places/fleet-science-center-san-diego) and a few minutes from the [San Diego Model Railroad Museum](https://ourplayday.com/places/san-diego-model-railroad-museum-san-diego), so a museum morning ends in a giant sandbox. Mission Bay is the biggest aquatic park of its kind in the country, with playgrounds along its 27 miles of shoreline, and the two at Tecolote Shores were rebuilt for accessible play. Downtown, the splash fountains at [Waterfront Park](https://ourplayday.com/places/waterfront-park-south-playground-san-diego) are three minutes from the ships of the [Maritime Museum of San Diego](https://ourplayday.com/places/maritime-museum-of-san-diego-san-diego).

Kellogg Park in La Jolla and Tidelands Park in Coronado are for the days you're out there anyway.

The [Fleet Science Center](https://ourplayday.com/places/fleet-science-center-san-diego) is about three minutes' walk, [The Nat](https://ourplayday.com/places/san-diego-natural-history-museum-the-nat-san-diego) about five, and the [Balboa Park Carousel](https://ourplayday.com/places/balboa-park-carousel-san-diego) and the [miniature train](https://ourplayday.com/places/balboa-park-miniature-train-san-diego) under ten.

Built for accessible play, with its own comfort station. It was the second half of the city's rebuild of Tecolote Shores, after the north playground, and a lit, step-free path joins the two, about 300 meters apart. This is where we'd take a kid who uses a wheelchair or a walker.
