# The best playgrounds in Seattle

Written 2026-10-25 by Play Day. Seattle playgrounds by neighborhood, from the jellyfish on Pier 58 to Lincoln Park on the Sound, and which ones have a restroom, water play or shade.

Seattle puts its playgrounds next to the things you came for: one in the plaza at Seattle Center between the [Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP)](https://ourplayday.com/places/museum-of-pop-culture-mopop-seattle) and the Armory, one on a pier beside the [Seattle Aquarium's Ocean Pavilion](https://ourplayday.com/places/seattle-aquarium-ocean-pavilion-seattle), and one under the old gas plant at [Gas Works Park](https://ourplayday.com/places/gas-works-park-kid-playground-seattle), with Lake Union below. Out past the center, the big parks have them too: [Discovery Park](https://ourplayday.com/places/discovery-park-playground-seattle), 560 acres of forest and beach, and [Lincoln Park](https://ourplayday.com/places/lincoln-park-seattle) on the Sound.

These are the playgrounds worth a trip across town (the 25-foot jellyfish on [Pier 58](https://ourplayday.com/places/pier-58-jellyfish-playground-seattle), the rope tower in [South Park](https://ourplayday.com/places/south-park-playground-seattle), the airplane at [Hubbard Homestead](https://ourplayday.com/places/hubbard-homestead-park-playground-seattle)) and the ones beside a beach, a wading pool or a museum you were headed to anyway.

## Seattle Center and the waterfront

### [Artists at Play Playground](https://ourplayday.com/places/artists-at-play-playground-seattle)

Neighborhood: Seattle Center

A 30-foot climbing tower, recommended for ages 5 to 12, in the plaza between the [Museum of Pop Culture (MOPOP)](https://ourplayday.com/places/museum-of-pop-culture-mopop-seattle) and the Armory. Around it are sound swings that set the kinetic artworks overhead swaying, musical instruments made for kids (a Letter Tree, a Rain Stick, a Sound Fence), listening stations with giant earphones, play mounds and a labyrinth with a bronze rebus at its center. The carousel is powered by whoever is pushing it and is ADA-accessible. Northwest artists Trimpin and Judith Caldwell designed it with Site Workshop and Highwire, and it opened in May 2015.

The [Seattle Children's Museum](https://ourplayday.com/places/seattle-children-s-museum-seattle) is about two minutes' walk away, the [Space Needle](https://ourplayday.com/places/space-needle-seattle) about the same and the [Pacific Science Center](https://ourplayday.com/places/pacific-science-center-seattle) about four.

Tip: The playground is just north of the Monorail station.

### [Pier 58 Jellyfish Playground](https://ourplayday.com/places/pier-58-jellyfish-playground-seattle)

Neighborhood: Waterfront

A 25-foot jellyfish whose tentacles swoop down into climbing nets, with an 18-foot slide, crab wobble boards, kelp posts and climbable bubbles popping out of the ground. The accessible pieces include magnetic bead panels and a slide platform you can roll onto. The pier opened in July 2025, and the playground is about the size of a basketball court, built for all ages and mobilities. Six elms shade the grove beside it, the raised lawn is turf, the restored Waterfront Fountain is back on the pier, and there are public restrooms.

The [Seattle Aquarium's Ocean Pavilion](https://ourplayday.com/places/seattle-aquarium-ocean-pavilion-seattle) is a couple of minutes along the waterfront.

The land belonged to Seattle Public Utilities and once supplied all of Queen Anne's water; the old pump house right beside the playground still shows part of the mechanism, and you can rent it for a birthday party.

Tip: The park is at the corner of 4th Avenue N and Ward Street, at the base of Queen Anne.

The picnic spots are right by the playground and the pool, and the rest of the park is the Volunteer Park Conservatory, the Seattle Asian Art Museum and the water tower.

Tip: The northeast corner entrance is the closest to the playground.

### [Cal Anderson Park](https://ourplayday.com/places/cal-anderson-park-seattle)

Neighborhood: Capitol Hill

A children's play area and a wading pool in Capitol Hill's main park, with a fountain, a texture pool and a reflecting pool in the middle of it, oversize chess boards, a lighted sports field and a meadow. The walk around the outside is about two thirds of a mile, and a gravel loop inside is about a third. For a toddler the pool is the point in summer. A bigger kid gets the field and the chess boards.

### [Gas Works Park Kid Playground](https://ourplayday.com/places/gas-works-park-kid-playground-seattle)

Neighborhood: Wallingford

Industrial-looking climbing equipment and a sand box beside a large play barn, rebuilt in 2018 with better access, in the park that was Seattle's gas plant (it shut down in 1956 and opened as a park in 1975). The original play area even used a smoke arrestor cap from the plant. Above it is a big hill popular for flying kites, a sundial and the view of the city across Lake Union. There are restrooms, grills and reservable picnic sites, and the Burke-Gilman Trail runs past the parking lot.

- Ages: Ages 3 and up

## The north end

### [Discovery Park Playground](https://ourplayday.com/places/discovery-park-playground-seattle)

Climbing structures, a zip line, swings, structures that look like tree houses and a long green slide, built for toddlers and older kids and for all abilities, just past the tennis courts near the Environmental Learning Center. It opened in December 2017.

Discovery Park is Seattle's largest at 560 acres, with two miles of tidal beach and the West Point Lighthouse, lit since 1881, which you can see from the South Beach Trail. Parking at the beach is ADA only, so you walk down or take the free shuttle from the top.

The off-leash area is up in the northern part of the park, an acre of wood chips with a small covered spot to sit. The sports court beside it was expanded with the Seattle Kraken's One Roof Foundation and finished that September, for basketball, soccer and street hockey.

The park is Seattle's sixth largest: a skate park, a three-quarter-mile walking path, picnic sites and the oldest golf course in the city.

Inside the community center, the free drop-in Tot Gym and Tot Rooms are indoor playtime for ages 5 and under in the colder months.

Five play structures for different age groups, several of them with ground-level ways in, and a swing set with a harness swing, all opened in February 2026 alongside four single-stall restrooms, a plaza and a picnic shelter painted with a mural by a Seattle artist. The paths were regraded for universal accessibility, and the two natural-turf baseball fields opened that summer.

The park is a mile of seawall and rocky beach under a bluff of forest and meadow, with switchbacks down on the north side and gentler trails on the south, five picnic shelters, a wading pool and Colman Pool, an outdoor 50-meter heated saltwater pool that runs in summer. The Fauntleroy ferry terminal is just south of the park.

### [Roxhill Park](https://ourplayday.com/places/roxhill-park-seattle)

A castle, built by hundreds of neighbors over five rainy days in November 2012 and opened the next April, which is why locals call it Castle Park. Two neighbors led the build and got a city grant for the tools. Beside the playground, about a mile of flat gravel and paved trail winds through a 5.3-acre wetland, and the park has a skate park, two soccer fields, two baseball fields, restrooms and grills.
