# 3 days in Vancouver with kids

Written 2026-10-02 by Play Day. Three days in Vancouver with kids: Granville Island and the beach, Stanley Park and the aquarium, then Science World and the gardens, with a map a day and seven places to stay.

Where else can you build a sandcastle in the morning, watch a sea otter at lunch and still see snow on the mountains from the playground? Vancouver sits between the water and the peaks, and you can feel it from almost every stop on this plan.

Day one is Granville Island and the beaches around it: an indoor play area, a boat-side lunch, a planetarium and a long evening on Kitsilano Beach. Day two is Stanley Park (two playgrounds and the aquarium), with a flight over Canada to finish. Day three is Science World, a creekside playground, and a pair of gardens that are better with kids than you'd guess.

It's built for kids from about two to ten, and it works in the rain more often than you'd think (Vancouver gets plenty, so that matters).

## Where to stay

Stay downtown, around the West End, Yaletown and the waterfront. From there it's a train from the airport, a short walk to most of day two and a quick bus or ferry to everything else. The trade is room size: book the suite or the connecting rooms first and the hotel second.

Our [Vancouver family hotel guide](https://ourplayday.com/guides/vancouver/family-hotels) says which room to ask for at each of these.

- [Century Plaza Hotel](https://ourplayday.com/places/century-plaza-hotel-vancouver): The one with the most for kids on paper: suites with kitchenettes, connecting rooms and an indoor pool, near Yaletown and the water. Confirmed on the listing: cribs available, connecting rooms, suite with separate bedroom, pool, kitchenette.
- [Blue Horizon Hotel](https://ourplayday.com/places/blue-horizon-hotel-vancouver): A tower in the West End with suites and an indoor pool, and Stanley Park in reach on foot. Confirmed on the listing: cribs available, suite with separate bedroom, pool.
- [Rosedale on Robson Suite Hotel](https://ourplayday.com/places/rosedale-on-robson-suite-hotel-vancouver): A suite hotel with kitchenettes, a fridge in the room and laundry on site, which is what you want for a few days with kids. Confirmed on the listing: suite with separate bedroom, pool, kitchenette.
- [Coast Coal Harbour Vancouver Hotel by APA](https://ourplayday.com/places/coast-coal-harbour-vancouver-hotel-by-apa-vancouver): Connecting rooms and a heated pool, on the Coal Harbour waterfront between downtown and Stanley Park. Confirmed on the listing: cribs available, connecting rooms, pool.
- [Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront](https://ourplayday.com/places/pinnacle-hotel-harbourfront-vancouver): Connecting rooms and an indoor heated pool, a short walk from Canada Place and Flyover. Confirmed on the listing: cribs available, connecting rooms, pool.
- [Times Square Suites Hotel](https://ourplayday.com/places/times-square-suites-hotel-vancouver): Suites with kitchenettes and laundry on site, on the Stanley Park side of the West End. Confirmed on the listing: suite with separate bedroom, kitchenette.
- [Fairmont Waterfront](https://ourplayday.com/places/fairmont-waterfront-vancouver): The splurge: connecting rooms and a heated pool on the harbour, with the cruise ships and the seaplanes outside. Confirmed on the listing: cribs available, connecting rooms, pool.

## At a glance

- Walking: Moderate. Each day clusters its stops, and the longest walks are the seawall stretches on day one and in Stanley Park. A stroller does well on the paved paths.
- Ages: Two to ten. Toddlers get the playgrounds, the beach and the garden. School-age kids get the science museum, the planetarium and the aquarium.
- Season: Summer is the easy one: long days and warm sand. Spring and fall are quieter, and gray days suit the indoor stops. Check the listings for hours before you plan around a museum.

## Getting around

You don't need a car. The Canada Line train runs from the airport straight into downtown, and from there it's the SkyTrain, buses and your feet. Day three's gardens are the one place where a car or a bus ride helps.

Small ferries cross False Creek between Granville Island, Yaletown and Science World, and kids will pick the boat over the bus every time. The seawall (a paved path along the water) links most of day one and runs all around Stanley Park.

## Day 1: Granville Island, Vanier Park and the beach

A day that starts indoors and ends in the sand. Granville Island is a small, busy peninsula full of kid-sized things, Vanier Park has the museums, and Kitsilano Beach is where the whole city goes when the sun comes out.

### Morning: [Kids Market and Adventure Zone, Granville Island](https://ourplayday.com/places/kids-market-and-adventure-zone-granville-island-vancouver) (give it about an hour and a half)

A market building made for kids, with an indoor play area in the middle. It's an easy way to start when the weather hasn't made up its mind, and it burns off the first round of energy before you walk the rest of the island.

- Restrooms: Yes
- Nearest food on this plan: The Sandbar Seafood Restaurant, 0.1 mi

### Late morning: [Sutcliffe Park Playground, Granville Island](https://ourplayday.com/places/sutcliffe-park-playground-granville-island-vancouver) (give it about 40 minutes)

A playground on the island itself, on the way to the water. A short stop, but the boats go by and the whole island smells like bread.

- Nearest food on this plan: The Sandbar Seafood Restaurant, 0.2 mi

### Lunch: [Tap & Barrel - Bridges, Granville Island](https://ourplayday.com/places/tap-barrel-bridges-granville-island-vancouver) (give it about an hour)

A waterfront restaurant at the edge of the island, with the city across the water. Watching the little ferries shuttle back and forth keeps a restless kid in a chair for a surprisingly long time.

Tip: The Sandbar is a short walk away if you'd rather have seafood.

- Takes reservations: Yes

Also: [The Sandbar Seafood Restaurant](https://ourplayday.com/places/the-sandbar-seafood-restaurant-vancouver).

### Afternoon: [H.R. MacMillan Space Centre](https://ourplayday.com/places/h-r-macmillan-space-centre-vancouver) (give it about two hours)

A space museum in the crab-shaped building in Vanier Park, with hands-on exhibits and a planetarium dome. It's a walk or a short bus ride from Granville Island, and a good one for the hot or wet part of the afternoon.

The Maritime Museum is a few minutes away on the same shoreline if anyone is more into boats than rockets.

- Nearest food on this plan: Tap & Barrel - Bridges, Granville Island, 0.4 mi

Also: [Vancouver Maritime Museum](https://ourplayday.com/places/vancouver-maritime-museum-vancouver), [Museum of Vancouver](https://ourplayday.com/places/museum-of-vancouver-vancouver).

### Late afternoon: [Kitsilano Beach Park Playground](https://ourplayday.com/places/kitsilano-beach-park-playground-vancouver) (give it about an hour and a half)

A playground beside one of the city's best-loved beaches, with the mountains across the bay. Let them dig and wade, and let someone else carry the towels back.

- Restrooms: Yes
- Nearest food on this plan: Sophie's Cosmic Cafe, 0.5 mi

### Dinner: [Sophie's Cosmic Cafe](https://ourplayday.com/places/sophie-s-cosmic-cafe-vancouver) (give it about an hour)

A retro diner a few blocks up from the beach, the kind of place with a long menu and room for everyone's order. Go early, before the line.

- Kids' menu: Yes

Evening: Walk back down to the sand for sunset. It's a nicer ending than a taxi.

## Day 2: Stanley Park, the aquarium and a flight over Canada

Stanley Park is huge, so pick your corner and stay in it. This one is the west side: two playgrounds near the water, the aquarium at the far end, then back downtown for a ride that feels like flying.

### Morning: [Second Beach Playground, Stanley Park](https://ourplayday.com/places/second-beach-playground-stanley-park-vancouver) (give it about an hour)

A playground right by the beach on the park's west side, and an easy first stop on a day with lots of walking ahead.

- Restrooms: Yes

### Late morning: [Ceperley Park Playground, Stanley Park](https://ourplayday.com/places/ceperley-park-playground-stanley-park-vancouver) (give it about 45 minutes)

A second playground a short walk from the first, tucked in among the trees. Having two within walking distance is how you buy yourself the aquarium without a meltdown.

Tip: There are no restaurants listed inside the park on this side, so pack a picnic.

- Restrooms: Yes

### Afternoon: [Vancouver Aquarium](https://ourplayday.com/places/vancouver-aquarium-vancouver) (give it about two and a half hours)

The aquarium at the park's far end, with Pacific sea life from the coast it sits on. Kids who liked the beach will spend a long time here. How to book is on the listing.

Tip: It's a long walk from the playgrounds, so a bus or a taxi is a fair choice.

### Late afternoon: [Flyover Vancouver](https://ourplayday.com/places/flyover-vancouver-vancouver) (give it about an hour)

A ride at Canada Place where you sit in a seat that lifts you in front of a huge screen and fly across the country. It suits school-age kids best, and it's indoors, which is welcome at the end of a long outdoor day.

- Nearest food on this plan: The Old Spaghetti Factory - Gastown, 0.4 mi

### Dinner: [The Old Spaghetti Factory - Gastown](https://ourplayday.com/places/the-old-spaghetti-factory-gastown-vancouver) (give it about an hour)

Pasta in Gastown, the old part of the city, in a building with plenty of space for a table of kids. It's the dinner nobody argues about.

- Takes reservations: Yes

Evening: Gastown's cobbled streets are a pleasant walk before bed. The steam clock is the thing kids ask about.

## Day 3: Science World, then the gardens

A museum morning by the water, then up to the hills where Vancouver keeps its gardens. It's the one day that needs a bus or a car, and the afternoon is calmer for it.

### Morning: [Science World](https://ourplayday.com/places/science-world-vancouver) (give it about two and a half hours)

The big silver dome at the end of False Creek, full of things to push, build and test. Kids get a lot out of it from toddler age up, and it's a good bet when the weather is bad. How to book is on the listing.

### Late morning: [Creekside Park Playground](https://ourplayday.com/places/creekside-park-playground-vancouver) (give it about 40 minutes)

A playground a minute from Science World, along the water. Run it off here before you go anywhere that needs quiet voices.

### Lunch: [Burgoo - Mount Pleasant](https://ourplayday.com/places/burgoo-mount-pleasant-vancouver) (give it about an hour)

A casual place in Mount Pleasant, on the way south, with big bowls of comfort food.

Tip: Fable Diner is nearby if you'd rather have breakfast food for lunch.

- Takes reservations: Yes

Also: [Fable Diner - Main & Broadway](https://ourplayday.com/places/fable-diner-main-broadway-vancouver).

### Afternoon: [Bloedel Conservatory](https://ourplayday.com/places/bloedel-conservatory-vancouver) (give it about an hour)

A glass dome on a hilltop with tropical plants and birds inside it. It's warm, it's a little steamy, and it's a nice rainy-day stop.

- Wheelchair accessible: Yes
- Restrooms: Yes

### Snack: [PlayScape Café](https://ourplayday.com/places/playscape-cafe-vancouver) (give it about an hour)

A café with a play area, close to the conservatory. Kids play, you sit down with something warm.

- Wheelchair accessible: Yes
- Changing table: Yes
- High chairs: Yes

### Dinner: [Rocky Mountain Flatbread - Main Street](https://ourplayday.com/places/rocky-mountain-flatbread-main-street-vancouver) (give it about an hour)

Flatbread pizzas on Main Street, easy to share across a table of different tastes.

- Takes reservations: Yes
- Kids' menu: Yes

Evening: VanDusen Botanical Garden is a short ride away if you have a second garden in you. Otherwise bed.

## If it rains

Vancouver rains a lot, and the plan already holds up. Science World, the Space Centre and the Bloedel Conservatory are all indoors. Add the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at UBC if you want one more, or the Museum of Anthropology on the same campus.

## With a toddler

Keep the Kids Market, the playgrounds and Kitsilano Beach, and trade the Space Centre for a long afternoon at Science World's smaller galleries. Skip Flyover. The Creekside and Second Beach playgrounds do a lot of work.

## With big kids

Add the Greenheart TreeWalk at the UBC Botanical Garden, a walkway up in the treetops, and the Museum of Anthropology next door. Flyover is a better fit at this age too.

## In summer

The beaches are the point. Add Rainbow Park and Coopers' Park near Yaletown for the water play and the lawns, and plan the playgrounds for the cooler ends of the day.

## What to skip

Trying to do all of Stanley Park in a day. It's far bigger than it looks on the map. Pick the west side and enjoy it, or you'll spend the day on the path.

## Questions

### Is Vancouver good for kids?

Yes. It's a compact city with a seawall, beaches, a big park and a lot of playgrounds, and the museums are built with kids in mind. Rain is the only catch, and there's plenty indoors.

### How many days do you need in Vancouver with kids?

Three is right. One for Granville Island and the beach, one for Stanley Park and the aquarium, one for Science World and the gardens. With a fourth, add UBC and the museums out there.

### Do you need a car in Vancouver with kids?

No. The train runs from the airport to downtown, and buses and ferries cover the rest. A car helps most on the garden day.

### Where should you stay in Vancouver with kids?

Downtown, around the West End, Yaletown or Coal Harbour. Century Plaza and Rosedale on Robson have suites with kitchenettes, and Coast Coal Harbour and Pinnacle have connecting rooms. Seven picks are under Where to stay.

### What can you do in Vancouver with kids when it rains?

Science World, the Space Centre, the Aquarium, the Bloedel Conservatory and the Kids Market are all indoors. Most of day three of this plan is under a roof.

### Is the Vancouver Aquarium worth it?

For kids who like animals, yes. It's a half-day with the walk, so pair it with the Stanley Park playgrounds.

## About this plan

The prose carries no prices, opening hours or ticket rules, because those change. Each place named links to its Play Day listing, which carries the kid facts (high chairs, changing tables, kids' menus, wheelchair access) with the source and month of each.
