The best family hotels in Zagreb
Written November 2026
Zagreb has plenty for kids: a cannon fired from Lotrščak Tower every day at noon, St. Mark's Church with its colored tile roof, and a contemporary art museum where the ticket includes a ride down a slide from the second floor. Maksimir Park has a playground built around a big wooden train, with the zoo beside it.
Ban Jelačić Square and the Upper Town
Ban Jelačić Square is the middle of Zagreb, and the Upper Town sits right above it, older and hillier, reached by a 66-meter funicular that starts just off Ilica. Tkalčićeva, a street lined with cafés, and Dolac, the market with its stalls of fruit and vegetables, are a few minutes' walk from the square, and from here most of the sights in both towns are on foot.
Hotel Dubrovnik Zagreb
Ban Jelačić Square
Hotel Dubrovnik has been on Ban Jelačić Square since 1929, in the pedestrian zone, so the front door opens onto the middle of town. The Crown Suite has a terrace over the square.
It stays quiet even when it's full, and breakfast has a lot of variety. The HaHaHouse, a museum of laughter you enter down a slide, is about 50 meters from the door.

Hotel Jägerhorn
Ilica
Open as a hotel since 1827, Jägerhorn is Zagreb's oldest, and it sits in a passage off Ilica that links the center with the Upper Town. There's a café, a terrace and a garden.
Each of the 18 rooms is a different shape, and in the suites the living area turns into a second bedroom. The funicular is about 130 meters away, and Vincek, for cakes and ice cream, is a few doors along Ilica.

The Lower Town, by the train station
South of the main square, the Lower Town is built around a U of seven green squares and the Botanical Garden, laid out in the late 1800s and early 1900s, with the main train station at the bottom of it. King Tomislav Square, in front of the station, has a fountain and flowers. It's flatter than the Upper Town, with trams running through it, and it's an easy base for a first visit.
Esplanade Zagreb Hotel
By the train station
Right next to the main train station, the Esplanade still has the marble staircase up to the rooms from when it opened in 1925, back when the station was a stop on the Orient Express. The tram stops out front, and Tkalčićeva is about a 15-minute walk.
Its restaurants have a kids' menu illustrated with the Esplanade's own mouse, the kitchen makes fresh fruit and vegetable baby food, and kids' orders go out first. There's a baby changing area on floor -1, stocked with diapers and wipes. The playground on King Petar Svačić Square is about 200 meters away.

The Sheraton has a heated indoor pool. Rooms on the inner courtyard are the quiet side of the building, and in summer meals are served on an outdoor terrace that looks over the center.
The train station is about 600 meters away and Ban Jelačić Square about 800. Zrinjevac, the park with the fountains and the music pavilion, is on the way there.

West of the center
Pantovčak is a quiet, leafy residential street close to British Square and its outdoor market and antiques fair, and about 1.6 km from Ban Jelačić Square. Farther south, Zonar is about 2 km from the main square, a short taxi ride.
Hotel President Pantovčak
Pantovčak
Hotel President is a handful of rooms and suites in a garden, and breakfast is in a restaurant up among the treetops. The Family Room is two rooms with a king bed in each and no door between them, facing the garden and opening onto a teak terrace.
The Museum of Illusions on Ilica is a walk of about 600 meters.

Zonar Zagreb by Maistra City Vibes
West of the center
Zonar's outdoor pool is up on the roof, open to all ages, with Zagreb spread out below it, and the rooms up on the 12th floor look out over the city. There's a big spread at breakfast.
The Monochrome Tribe Room is two connected doubles, each with a double or two twin beds, and sleeps four. The Nikola Tesla Technical Museum, with a mine, Tesla's lab and a planetarium, is less than a kilometer east.

Sljeme, up on Medvednica
Medvednica is Zagreb's own mountain, a nature park with marked trails, and Sljeme is its top. The cable car goes up from Gračansko dolje: take tram 14 from the main square to the end of the line at Mihaljevac, then tram 15 to the lower station. The ride up takes around 20 minutes, with a stop at Brestovac halfway.
Hotel Tomislavov dom, Sljeme
Sljeme
Tomislavov dom is on a wooded rise near the top of Sljeme, a short walk from where the cable car lets you off. There's a small play corner for kids, Restaurant Tomislav and a terrace.
Most rooms are doubles, and 16 of them take an extra bed. The Sljeme 360 viewpoint is up the TV tower close by, and in winter the ski runs are a few minutes' walk.
By the airport
Zagreb's airport is southeast of the city, and a night out here makes an early flight or a late arrival simpler. The main square is about 9 km away.
Best Western Airport Hotel Stella
Airport
Stella is ten minutes from the airport, and the hotel will book a car to get you there. The Family Loft puts two single beds for kids up on a gallery above a big boxspring bed.
The Family Room is 30 square meters, with a king, a single and an extra bed. Breakfast is a large buffet.
