Disneyland vs. California Adventure with a three-year-old
Written October 2026
For a three-year-old we'd pick Disneyland Park. Fantasyland, the castle and a parade that rolls right past the stroller are all sized for a kid that age. Next door, California Adventure has Cars Land, where a kid who loves Lightning McQueen gets to walk around inside Radiator Springs.
Height starts to matter around three. Most three-year-olds are between 36 and 40 inches, tall enough for the 32-inch rides in Cars Land and short of the 40-inch ones. At Disneyland Park it barely comes up: Fantasyland is a dozen rides with no height line, and the castle is small enough to feel like theirs.
California Adventure is better for a kid obsessed with Cars, or for an older sibling who wants the coasters.

Fantasyland alone fills a day, and a kid too small for anything else still gets all of it: Dumbo, the carousel, Peter Pan's Flight, Alice in Wonderland, Mr. Toad and "it's a small world". The Jungle Cruise, the railroad and the Storybook canal boats are the sit-down rides, and Mickey's Toontown is a whole land of things to climb on and a gentle Mickey and Minnie ride.
Tiana's Bayou Adventure and Big Thunder both start at 40 inches, so those go to the older sibling. The Baby Care Center is at the end of Main Street.

California Adventure for a Cars fan
Cars Land is a full-size Radiator Springs.

Mater's Junkyard Jamboree and Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters both take a kid from 32 inches, and Radiator Springs Racers is 40, so a three-year-old gets two of the three and sees the town after dark lit in neon. The Little Mermaid ride, Toy Story Midway Mania, Jessie's Critter Carousel and Monsters, Inc. have no height line, and Redwood Creek Challenge Trail is a play area with rope bridges and slides.
The rest of the park is for taller kids: Soarin' at 40 inches, Incredicoaster at 48, Guardians at 40. With a three-year-old, the park fills about half a day.

Hopping is easy here
The two gates face each other across a plaza, so a park-hopper ticket lets you do Fantasyland in the morning, nap, and come back for Cars Land at dusk. With two days, that's what we'd book. Once a kid hits 40 inches, California Adventure adds Radiator Springs Racers, Soarin' and Guardians of the Galaxy, and the two parks come closer to even.
Where to stay for a nap
Disney's Grand Californian Hotel and Spa has its own gate into California Adventure, and the Disneyland Hotel is a few minutes' walk down Downtown Disney, with pools and waterslides for the afternoon. Both are close enough to go back to in the middle of the day (at three, you'll want that break).
