Family hotels at Fisherman's Wharf, and which one suits your kids
Written October 2026
Nine hotels on one waterfront, sorted by what your family needs, with how far each sits from the sea lions, Musée Mécanique and Ghirardelli Square.
The Wharf works with kids if you pick the right end of it. The east end, around Pier 39, is where the sea lions are, and Hotel Zephyr is the closest bed to them. The west end, around Aquatic Park and Ghirardelli Square, is quieter, and it's where the Argonaut and Fairmont Heritage Place sit. Between them are a couple of blocks of North Point and Columbus, and that's where the pools and the suites are.
Every distance below is straight-line from our map pin to the sight's pin, not a walking route. Add a bit for corners and crosswalks, and a lot for a stroller on the hills (the Wharf itself is flat, but the streets climb fast toward Russian Hill and Telegraph Hill).
A kitchen and a second bedroom: Fairmont Heritage Place, or the Family Suite at the Holiday Inn Express on a smaller budget. A pool: Hotel Caza or the Riu Plaza. Sea lions from the front door: Hotel Zephyr. A baby: Hotel Zoe or the Kimpton Alton. The quietest end: the Argonaut.
How we picked
Where a hotel has a room that suits a family better than the rest, the write-up names it.
Suites and kitchens
Three kids in one room is a lot of bedtime. These are the hotels with a door to close, or a kitchen for the night nobody wants a restaurant.
Fairmont Heritage Place, Ghirardelli Square
Ghirardelli Square
Why we picked it: Apartments with one to three bedrooms and full kitchens, so it's the one for a week or for two families traveling together.
These are apartments, not rooms: one, two or three bedrooms, each with a full kitchen, a dining area, a living room and a sofa bed. It's the one to book for a week, or for two sets of parents traveling together. A washer and dryer are only in the three-bedroom, though the building has laundry. Cribs are free, and there are board games and puzzles to borrow.
It sits inside Ghirardelli Square, and the Ghirardelli Chocolate Experience is about 150 feet from the lobby. Aquatic Park and the cable car on Hyde Street are across the street, the Maritime Visitor Center is about 0.2 miles, and the Musée Mécanique is about 0.5 miles. Francisco Park Playground is about 0.2 miles uphill.
It's also the farthest from Pier 39 on this page, about 0.7 miles to the sea lions in a straight line, and the hills start right behind the square. Valet parking is included for up to two cars, which at the Wharf counts for a lot. There's no pool.
Doesn't suit: a family that wants the sea lions to be the whole trip. You'll walk the length of the Wharf each time.

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Fisherman's Wharf
North Point, east of Columbus
Why we picked it: The Family Suite sleeps five or six and has a kitchenette, the cheaper way to a kitchen at the Wharf.
The cheaper way to a kitchen. The Family Suite sleeps five or six with two queens, a queen sleeper sofa and a kitchenette (sink, microwave, fridge). Breakfast is free, hot and cold. Book the Family Suite by name, because the standard rooms are a regular Holiday Inn Express and the reason to be here is the suite.
The sea lions are about 0.4 miles away in a straight line, and the Musée Mécanique is about 0.2 miles. Joe DiMaggio Playground is about 0.3 miles toward North Beach, and Washington Square about 0.5.
There's no pool, and parking is valet only.
Doesn't suit: anyone who wants a lobby with a bit of play in it. It's a good, plain base.

Kimpton Alton Fisherman's Wharf
Jones and Beach, mid Wharf
Why we picked it: The baby gear: a playard with a bassinet, a MamaRoo and a bath on request, plus a fridge for milk, in the middle of the Wharf.
The suites add a living and dining area to the two-queen room, and connecting rooms exist for a bigger group. What sets the Alton apart is the baby gear: ask and you get a playard with a bassinet, a MamaRoo seat and a baby bath, all free, and there's a fridge for breast milk. Older kids get a welcome gift and a scooter to borrow.
It's in the middle of the Wharf: the Musée Mécanique is about 0.2 miles, the sea lions about 0.4 miles, and Ghirardelli Square about 0.35 miles the other way, all in a straight line. Joe DiMaggio Playground is about 0.3 miles.
No pool, and parking is valet only.
Doesn't suit: a family that wants a kitchen. The suites have more space, not a stove.

A hotel with a pool
Almost nobody at the Wharf has one, and the fog means an outdoor pool is a summer-afternoon plan, not a given. Two hotels here have one, and both are heated.
Hotel Caza
Columbus and Bay, edge of North Beach
Why we picked it: A heated outdoor pool open all year and a game room, a few blocks back from the water on the edge of North Beach.
The heated outdoor pool is open all year, and there's a game room with old-school video games, foosball and a pool table. Cribs are free. The Deluxe Two Queens sleeps four, and for five you ask for a king connected to a two-queen, because rollaways don't fit in the two-queen rooms.
It sits a few blocks back from the water, and Pier 39's sea lions are about 0.45 miles away in a straight line, so it's a real walk with a small kid. The Musée Mécanique is about 0.25 miles, and Francisco Park Playground about 0.2 miles.
The rooms don't come with a fridge, which matters if you're carrying milk.
Doesn't suit: a baby who needs a fridge, or a family that wants the sea lions at the door.

Riu Plaza Fisherman's Wharf
Mason and Beach, east Wharf
Why we picked it: A heated courtyard pool, a fridge in the room, breakfast included and self-parking, a quarter mile from the sea lions.
A big hotel with an outdoor courtyard pool (heated), a fridge in the room and a full breakfast buffet that's included. There's self-parking on site, which is rare here. Book the Deluxe Two Queens, as there's only one suite.
The location is the other half of it. Pier 39 and the sea lions are about 0.25 miles in a straight line, the Aquarium of the Bay about 0.25 miles, and the Musée Mécanique about 0.2 miles. The Powell-Mason cable car turnaround is at Bay and Taylor, close by.
It's a tour-group hotel and it feels like one: plain rooms, and a breakfast room that fills up around 8.
Doesn't suit: a family that wants a boutique feel, or a quiet lobby.

Next to Pier 39
If the sea lions are why you came, sleep close enough to go back at 7am and again after dinner. Expect crowds, street performers and noise until late.
Hotel Zephyr
Across from Pier 39
Why we picked it: The closest hotel to the sea lions here, with The Yard's oversized games outside and a game room inside.
The closest hotel to the sea lions on this page: about 1,000 feet in a straight line, with the Aquarium of the Bay about the same. The F streetcar stops outside. The draw for kids is The Yard, an outdoor courtyard of oversized games, fire pits and sculptures, plus a game room inside with ping pong and pool.
Every room is either one king or two doubles, and there are no suites, so a family of four is in two doubles. For five or six, ask about the connecting rooms. Every room has a fridge.
There's no pool,, and it sits in the busiest corner of the Wharf. Ask for a room away from the street.
Doesn't suit: a family that needs more than one room's worth of space in a single unit, or anyone hoping for a quiet evening.

Hotel Zoe Fisherman's Wharf
North Point, east Wharf
Why we picked it: A good fit for a trip with a baby: cribs and fridges, a block back from the water between Pier 39 and the Cannery.
A block back from the water between Pier 39 and the Cannery, and a good fit for a trip with a baby. Cribs are free but first come first served, so ask when you book. Rooms have fridges, and there are bikes, board games and s'mores in the evening.
The sea lions are about 0.35 miles away in a straight line, and Joe DiMaggio Playground about 0.2 miles.
There's no pool, and no rollaways or playards, so a third bed means looking elsewhere. Connecting rooms exist, but the hotel won't confirm them until check-in, so don't plan a trip for five around them.
Doesn't suit: a family of five, or kids who want a pool.

The quieter west end
The west end of the Wharf, toward Aquatic Park, has fewer crowds and a calmer feel at night. The price is distance: the sea lions are a half-mile or more from here. Hills start close, so a stroller does better here with a plan.
Argonaut Hotel
Aquatic Park, west end
Why we picked it: The quieter west end in a brick cannery, with suites that put the king bed behind a sliding door and a pull-out sofa for the kids.
A 1907 brick cannery inside the Maritime National Historical Park, with the San Francisco Maritime Visitor Center on the ground floor (about 150 feet from the lobby in a straight line). Aquatic Park's little beach is a block away, and the Hyde Street cable car runs nearby. The nautical theme is everywhere, which kids tend to love.
The suites are the room to book: the king bed sits behind a sliding door, with a pull-out sofa on the other side for the kids. There's also a Family room category. Cribs are free, connecting rooms exist (treat them as a request), and rollaways only fit some rooms.
The sea lions are about 0.5 miles away in a straight line, the Musée Mécanique about 0.3 miles and Ghirardelli Square about 0.2 miles. There's no pool, and parking is valet only.
Doesn't suit: a family that wants Pier 39 on the doorstep, or a pool.

Courtyard San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf
Beach Street, west of Pier 39
Why we picked it: A plain chain hotel at the quieter west end, with a fridge in the room, cribs and connecting rooms, close to the Maritime Visitor Center.
A standard chain hotel, so the case for it is simple: rooms with a fridge, free cribs, and connecting rooms available. Bed setups include two queens, which sleeps four. Valet is the main parking option, with self-parking next door.
It's close to the Maritime Visitor Center (about 0.1 miles in a straight line) and the Musée Mécanique (about 0.2 miles). The sea lions are about 0.4 miles away, and Ghirardelli Square about 0.3 miles.
There's no pool, and nothing here is built around kids. It's a clean base with a good location.
Doesn't suit: a family that wants a game room, a pool or a suite.
- Fridge
- Yes
Fog, noise and hills
Summer here is cool and often gray, so pack layers for the kids and don't count on an outdoor pool in July. The Wharf is flat, but the streets rise steeply toward Russian Hill and Telegraph Hill, and the climb from Ghirardelli Square is the one that stops strollers. Ask for a room away from the street at any of these.
Parking and a car
Most hotels on this page park by valet, and the Riu and the Courtyard (next door) offer self-parking. Fairmont Heritage Place includes valet for up to two cars. You can do the Wharf without a car: the cable cars and the F streetcar run along it, and the sights on this page are close together. Rent one for the day you leave town. If you're driving, leave nothing visible in the car: local news reports describe car break-ins around the Wharf as a problem, and the Fisherman's Wharf Community Benefit District has put warning signs on its parking meters.

Questions
Is Fisherman's Wharf good with kids?
Yes, for a day or two. The sea lions at Pier 39, the Musée Mécanique, the Aquarium of the Bay, Aquatic Park and the cable cars are all within about a mile of each other, and you can walk it. It's crowded and touristy, and the food is mostly an easy meal, not a destination. Most families do the Wharf in a day or two and then head elsewhere.
Is Fisherman's Wharf safe for families?
It's one of San Francisco's busiest visitor areas, and the sights are close together and flat. The thing to know is cars: local news reports describe break-ins around the Wharf, and the Wharf's community benefit district has put up warning signs, so leave nothing visible in a parked car.
Which Fisherman's Wharf hotels have family suites?
The Holiday Inn Express has a Family Suite with two queens, a sleeper sofa and a kitchenette. Fairmont Heritage Place has one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments with full kitchens. The Argonaut's suites put the king bed behind a sliding door, with a pull-out sofa for the kids, and the Kimpton Alton has suites with a living and dining area. Hotel Zephyr has no suites.
Which Fisherman's Wharf hotels have a pool?
Two: Hotel Caza (heated, outdoors) and the Riu Plaza (heated, outdoors). The Argonaut, Hotel Zoe, the Holiday Inn Express, Hotel Zephyr, the Courtyard, the Kimpton Alton and Fairmont Heritage Place don't.
Do you need a car at Fisherman's Wharf?
No. The sights are close together, the cable cars and the F streetcar run along the Wharf, and parking at most hotels is valet only. A car is only worth it for a day trip out of the city.
Which end of Fisherman's Wharf is best for kids?
The east end, around Pier 39, if the sea lions and the aquarium are the plan (Hotel Zephyr and the Riu are the closest). The west end, around Aquatic Park and Ghirardelli Square, if you want quieter nights (the Argonaut and Fairmont Heritage Place).
