Family hotels near the National Mall, by end of the Mall
Written October 2026
The National Mall, to a kid, is the planes at Air and Space, the dinosaurs at Natural History, the carousel between the museums and a lawn to run on in between. The Smithsonian museums are free, so a trip back to the hotel at nap time and out again afterward costs nothing.
The Mall is about two miles long, so the hotels are grouped by where you sleep: south of the museums around L'Enfant Plaza, the Wharf on the river, Capitol Hill, and Penn Quarter north of the Mall. For the whole city, see Washington DC hotels with suites, connecting rooms or a pool.
South of the museums: L'Enfant Plaza and Maryland Avenue
The Air and Space Museum is the nearest museum to the Holiday Inn and four blocks from the Residence Inn, with the Smithsonian carousel a few minutes further along the Mall.
Residence Inn Washington DC National Mall
E Street SW, by Federal Center
Every room is a suite with a kitchen (a full-size fridge, a stovetop and a microwave), breakfast is free and hot, there's a heated indoor pool, and the laundry on site is free as well. The two-bedroom suite has two queens, a sofa bed and two bathrooms for up to six.
By the hotel's count the Air and Space Museum is four blocks away and the Federal Center SW Metro one block, and the US Botanic Garden, a glasshouse that goes from jungle to desert in a few steps, is about 0.6 km.
