Waikiki or Ko Olina with kids: picking your Oahu base
Written October 2026
Waikiki is the strip: Kalakaua Avenue, the beach with the walled swimming enclosure at Kuhio Beach Park, the zoo and the aquarium at the Diamond Head end, and dinner within a block of wherever you sleep. Ko Olina is 17 miles the other way from the airport, 642 acres around four rock-sheltered lagoons joined by a mile and a half of seaside paths, where the water stays calm and shallow and the hotel is the day.
Waikiki is about a 35-minute drive from Ko Olina, so you pick one. The best family hotels in Waikiki goes deeper on the strip, and Aulani vs. Hilton Hawaiian Village weighs the two biggest resorts against each other.
Ko Olina, the west side
The Ko Olina Lagoons are the beach here, four of them, and Ko Olina Station's shops and restaurants are on the resort. Wet'n'Wild Hawaii, with a kids' area of slides and tipping buckets, is about 4 km away in Kapolei.
Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa
Ko Olina, on the first lagoon
Disney's Hawaii, built around a volcano: the Waikolohe Stream lazy river is open to all ages, Keiki Cove is a splash zone for kids 5 and under, the Menehune Bridge water play is for kids 48 inches and under, and Rainbow Reef is a snorkeling lagoon of fish with its own entry fee. The Wailana pool is adults only.
Aunty's Beach House is the kids' club, and the villas have kitchens for a longer stay. The lagoon in front is one of the four, about 0.3 km to its center.

Waikiki or Ko Olina: how the two differ
Ko Olina is a resort week: calm lagoons with sand, villas with kitchens at the Marriott and the Beach Villas, a lazy river at Aulani and kids' clubs at Aulani, the Four Seasons and the Marriott, with the restaurants at Ko Olina Station and in the hotels. Honolulu is a 35-minute drive.
Waikiki has the town around it: the swimming enclosure at Kuhio Beach, the zoo and the aquarium a walk away, a farmers market by the Alohilani, a bakery beside the Embassy Suites and dinner within a block or two of each hotel. The pools with slides are at the Hilton and the Helumoa Playground, and the Embassy Suites has the mini fridge and microwave in every suite and breakfast included.
