The best playgrounds in Houston
Written October 2026
Houston with a kid is the Houston Zoo, Children's Museum Houston and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Past those, the city runs 232 playgrounds and 27 spraygrounds, and these are the ones worth the drive.
The Commons at Hermann Park has a 45-foot rocket ship slide next door to the zoo. Buffalo Bayou Park has a nature play area with a stream and a boulder scramble, and downtown, Discovery Green has a rebuilt playground and a fountain to run through. Levy Park sends a boardwalk up into the live oaks. The city built playgrounds for kids of every ability at Memorial Park, Eastwood Park and Tidwell Park, Westchase opened a new park in 2025, and Evelyn's Park in Bellaire has a bronze Mad Hatter's tea party you can sit down at.
Downtown and Buffalo Bayou
John P. McGovern Playground
Downtown
The downtown playground, for ages 5 to 12, rebuilt in 2021 with twice the play space it had before, 31 new trees over it and lights for evening play. Restrooms are under the Stedman West Veranda beside it. Discovery Green around it is 12 acres of things to do after: the Gateway Fountain, where jets arc 14 feet over a granite slope and kids run through them all summer, the Mist Tree on the picnic lawn with its 80 nozzles and a curtain of rain around the rim, kayaks on the one-acre Kinder Lake and two restaurants.
The Information Center is in the Alkek Building near the Gateway Fountain.

Mendez Play Space at Discovery Green
Downtown
A toddler playground just right of Discovery Green's sliding hill, with slides, sensory equipment, a cushioned ground and seating all around it for the grown-ups. The McGovern playground is right behind it, so a two-year-old and a six-year-old each get a structure of their own.

Barbara Fish Daniel Nature Play Area at Buffalo Bayou Park
Buffalo Bayou Park
A boulder scramble, climbing logs and stones, a climbing net, a stream with a waterfall, a 33-foot slide and a three-level tree house with a boat deck, on a rolling lawn at the Sabine Street end of Buffalo Bayou Park. It's for kids 13 and under. The Water Works next to it has the parking, the restrooms, bike rentals and food trucks in the entry court, and the Cistern, built in 1926 and open for tours, is at the same address.
Lost Lake, a restored pond farther along the park, has FLORA, a Mexican restaurant, and restrooms of its own. Discovery Green is about a mile and a half east.
The picnic pavilion can be rented for birthday parties.

Hermann Park
The Commons at Hermann Park
Hermann Park
Two acres of Play Gardens at the center of the Commons, the 26 acres at Fannin and Cambridge that opened in April 2024 with the Houston Zoo on one side and McGovern Lake and the Japanese Garden on the other. There's Swing Hill, Cypress Grove with snake and alligator climbers, the H-E-B Gorilla Forest and Splash Cove, where towers shoot water into the air. Space Adventure has the 45-foot Rocket Ship slide and a space capsule to climb. The Thicket is a wooded corner for kids up to 5, with the Burrow, Toad Hollow and the Snake Den, and each area has shaded seating for parents.
The Lott Family Carousel (a choice of animals, and wheelchair accessible) is here too, the Wortham Pavilion has a café and a food truck court, and the Hermann Park train stops at Bob Weekly Station in the Commons on its 20-to-25-minute loop, with another station across from the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Upper Kirby, Memorial Park and Bellaire
Levy Park Children's Park
Upper Kirby
A climbing wall with a seven-foot-wide slide, the Cosmo climbing sphere, lighted tunnels, dance chimes, play berms and a three-tiered water feature, in the middle of a six-acre park that reopened in 2017 after a redesign. A colorful boardwalk winds up from the Children's Park into the live oak canopy.
The Children's Pavilion has seating, the dog park is off on its own behind a double gate, and the park runs free programs all year, with Gaspachos Mexican Bites, Hearsay and the Kind ice cream truck for food. The land came to the city in 1941 from the estate of Leon Levy.

Vale-Asche Foundation Playground at Memorial Park
Memorial Park
Houston's first Playground Without Limits, opened in December 2006 across from the golf course near Haskell Street, with a structure that's fully accessible for kids with disabilities. It's one of the two spots in the park's 1,500 acres where you can bring your own grill (the Picnic Loop is the other).
The Clay Family Eastern Glades, north of Memorial Drive between the golf course and Crestwood Drive, is 100 acres around the five-acre Hines Lake with two and a half miles of boardwalks and accessible trails, lakeside pavilions and restrooms, open since 2020. The Kinder Land Bridge, two 35-foot mounds that have carried the park over Memorial Drive since 2023, has animal footprints etched into the East Mound and the skyline from the top of both.

Evelyn's Park
Bellaire
A natural playground built around reclaimed tree stumps, with a ten-foot slide, a double slide, a fan slide, the Discovery Hills and a Splash 'N Play, on the five acres where Teas Nursery stood from 1910 until 2009. The park is named for Evelyn Rubenstein, whose sons bought the land and gave it to the city of Bellaire.
In the southeast corner, Move One Place On is a bronze Alice in Wonderland tea party by Bridgette Mongeon: Alice, the March Hare, the Cheshire Cat, the Dormouse and the Mad Hatter around a ten-foot table with room for six to eight real guests, and 150 details from the book hidden in it (a small Humpty Dumpty is somewhere in the table legs). Betsy's is the café, and there's a Great Lawn.
The West lot is off Newcastle Street and the East lot off Mulberry Lane.

West Houston
Camden Park
Westchase
Climbing boulders, a spinning carousel, mound tunnels, a hanging boardwalk and a water zone on 3.4 acres along Wilcrest Drive, open since April 2025. The restrooms are air-conditioned, with separate family restrooms.
The rest is a big activity lawn with a performance pavilion, an outdoor reading room, fitness stations and a dog park split for large and small dogs, with free storytimes and classes through the year. The Robinson-Westchase library is a minute's walk away, and its lot takes the overflow parking.

Alief Park
Alief
A large climbing net and a climbing wall (the first climbing wall in a Houston city park) outside the Alief Neighborhood Center, finished in the fall of 2022 with the public library, the health department and the community center under one roof. Out in the park there's a pool, a skate park, tennis and basketball courts, soccer and futsal fields and walking paths of different lengths.
Nottingham Park
West Memorial
Twenty-two county acres off Kimberley Lane with a playground, a Kid Fit Park and a splash pad, picnic tables and shade canopies, tennis courts, a disc golf course and a trail lined with exercise stations. Camden Park is about three and a half miles south.
