The best family hotels in San Diego

Where to sleep in San Diego with kids, which room to ask for, and what the rate conveniently leaves out.
Picture it: flights booked, and now you're choosing between the beach, the bay and downtown. Here's the short version. With little kids, Mission Bay wins. The water is flat, the resorts have pools and their own beaches, and you can walk to the sand in pajamas. Shelter Island is the quieter version, on San Diego Bay out toward Point Loma. Downtown and Little Italy trade the beach for kitchens, free breakfast and a walk to the waterfront.
Every hotel's own site says it's kid friendly, which tells you pretty much nothing. So each write-up here says which room to ask for with kids, what you can walk to from the door, and the catch (in San Diego it's usually a nightly resort fee and paid parking).
Short on time? A toddler pool and a beach: San Diego Mission Bay Resort. Six people in one suite with a door between you: the Bahia's Bay Family Suite. A kitchen and free breakfast downtown: Homewood Suites or the Residence Inn. Balboa Park on foot: Inn at the Park.
How we picked
These are hotels we'd honestly send a friend with two kids to. The facts under each hotel come from its own site, room pages and amenities pages, and its Play Day listing. Where a big brand's page wouldn't open for us, we went by that official page as it shows in search results. If a fact is missing, we couldn't confirm it (not that the answer is no).
Everything here is in the city of San Diego. Hotel del Coronado, La Jolla Shores and the LEGOLAND hotels in Carlsbad are in their own towns, so they're not on this list. We also left out hotels we couldn't get real family facts for, pool or no pool.
Mission Bay
Calm bay beaches, resort pools and the best new playgrounds in the city, all on the water. Belmont Park and the ocean are across the thin strip of Mission Beach, and SeaWorld is a short drive across the bay. What you give up: a nightly resort fee and paid parking almost everywhere, and downtown is a drive.
Bahia Resort Hotel
Mission Beach
The one built for kids. It sits on its own 14-acre peninsula in Mission Bay, with a calm beach, a junior Olympic pool and a playground with a rock-wall front and a slide that gets ridden over and over. There's usually something going on: beach games to borrow, a scavenger hunt from the concierge, movie nights on the patio in season and the Bahia Belle sternwheeler out on the bay.
The room to book is the Bay Family Suite. The main room is a studio with two queens, a sofa bed, a kitchenette and a balcony, and it connects to a second room with its own bed and a second bathroom. That's six people sleeping properly, with a door you can close after bedtime.
Belmont Park and the ocean are a short walk across the road, and the Bonita Cove playground is next door.

Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa
Pacific Beach
The Bahia's sister resort, a few minutes up Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach, on the same calm bay. The heated pool is ringed with palms, frisbees and beach games are free to borrow, and there's an arcade and a flock of talking parrots to visit (expect to say hello every time you pass).
Book the Studio: two queens, a sofa bed and a kitchenette with a mini fridge and a microwave, up in the tower with a view. If you want a door between you and the kids, the Water View and Resort Suites put the king in its own bedroom, with a sofa bed and a full-size fridge in the living room.
The smallest tower rooms have one king and no kitchen, so skip those with kids.

San Diego Mission Bay Resort
Mission Bay
The toddler pick. Next to the waterfront pool is a shallow wading pool just for small kids, and the resort's own beach on the bay is steps away. Bikes are included, there's a crafts corner every day, and on summer Saturdays the fire pits do s'mores.
It's on the quieter east shore, and Tecolote Shores, the inclusive playground with the zipline, is a short walk down the path.
The catch is the usual Mission Bay one: a nightly resort fee and paid parking on top of the rate.

Shelter Island
A little strip of land in San Diego Bay, lined with marinas, palm trees and a waterfront path that's made for scooters. It's quieter than Mission Bay, and it's the closest base for the Cabrillo tide pools and Ocean Beach. You'll want a car.
Kona Kai San Diego Resort
Shelter Island
The splurge on the bay. It has a private beach (it calls it the only one in San Diego) with sandcastles, bean bag toss and a bonfire every night, and s'mores kits from the front desk. There are two pools, and the kid one is easy to pick: the Tiki pool is the family pool, and Paloma is adults only.
Book the kids' tent and a play tent is set up in the room before you check in. Cruiser bikes and lawn games come with the resort fee.
Parking is extra on top of that fee, and it adds up over a week.

Shelter Island
A low-key, garden-heavy hotel on the Shelter Island marina, with a heated pool, a putting green, ping pong and bikes. It feels tropical in a way the big resorts don't.
Ask for a suite, which gives you a living area apart from the beds, so bedtime doesn't have to end the evening.

Best Western Plus Island Palms Hotel & Marina
Shelter Island
The roomy pick for the bay. The Water View and Grand View Suites are about 600 square feet with a queen sofa sleeper and sleep six, which is a lot of room for Shelter Island.
There's a heated pool and hot tubs, and the marina and the bayfront promenade are right outside. Breakfast isn't included, except in some packages.

Downtown, Little Italy and Balboa Park
Stay here for the waterfront and the museums. The Midway, the Maritime Museum and the Little Italy restaurants are a walk from the suite hotels, the trolley runs to Old Town, and Balboa Park is a short drive or a longer walk. The beaches are a drive.
Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina
Downtown
The pool deck is the reason, and it's the biggest in downtown: two outdoor pools, one of them a heated kids' pool, plus a splash zone. Summer weekends bring kids' activities and movie nights on the deck.
Seaport Village, the San Diego Children's Park and the New Children's Museum are all a short walk.
It sits next to the convention center and it's a convention hotel at heart, so check that a big show isn't in town on your dates before you book.

Homewood Suites by Hilton San Diego Downtown/Bayside
Little Italy
Every room is a suite with a separate living area and a full kitchen, stove top and dishwasher included. Breakfast is free and hot, and a free grocery service means the milk can be in the fridge before the kids are.
There's an outdoor pool, and it's on the edge of Little Italy, a short walk to the bay and the Maritime Museum.

Residence Inn San Diego Downtown
Little Italy
Suites with fully equipped kitchens and sofa beds, a free hot breakfast every morning and a heated outdoor pool that's open all year. It's just up Pacific Highway from the Homewood, so pick whichever has the better rate for your dates.

Club Wyndham Inn at the Park
Bankers Hill
The one for a Balboa Park trip. It's at Sixth and Spruce, on the west edge of the park, so the Sixth Avenue Playground (the one with the fire engine) is basically across the street and the zoo is within walking distance.
Units run from studios to two-bedroom suites that sleep six, all with kitchenettes, and there's coin laundry. There's no pool, and parking is valet only.
It's a Club Wyndham resort, so it's mostly booked by owners. Rooms for everyone else come through Wyndham's travel deals, so look early.

Out in Rancho Bernardo
Fair warning: this one isn't a base for the beaches or Balboa Park. It's a good 30 to 40 minutes north of downtown without traffic. It makes sense for a trip built around the Safari Park in Escondido or LEGOLAND, with a resort pool to come back to.

A golf resort that gets the pool question right. The Bernardo pool is adults only, and the Santiago pool is the family one, with splash zones and games, so nobody's shushing anybody.
Poolside service runs through the afternoon, and there are cabanas to book if you want shade that's yours.

Resort fees and parking
Most of the Mission Bay and Shelter Island resorts add two things the headline rate leaves out: a nightly resort fee and parking. The fee usually covers bikes, beach games and the activity calendar, so use them. Over a week it all adds up to a lot, which is where the downtown suite hotels earn their place: free breakfast and a kitchen save more than you'd think with kids.
Do you need a car?
In Mission Bay and on Shelter Island, pretty much yes. Downtown, you can walk the waterfront and take the trolley to Old Town, but the tide pools, the beaches and Balboa Park's museums are all easier with a car.
