The best playgrounds in San Diego
Written October 2026
San Diego has tons for kids outdoors, starting with the San Diego Zoo and the museums around it in Balboa Park, and the best playgrounds sit right next to all of it. Pepper Grove is just south of the Fleet Science Center and a few minutes from the San Diego Model Railroad Museum, so a museum morning ends in a giant sandbox. Mission Bay is the biggest aquatic park of its kind in the country, with playgrounds along its 27 miles of shoreline, and the two at Tecolote Shores were rebuilt for accessible play. Downtown, the splash fountains at Waterfront Park are three minutes from the ships of the Maritime Museum of San Diego.
Kellogg Park in La Jolla and Tidelands Park in Coronado are for the days you're out there anyway.
In Balboa Park
Pepper Grove Playground
Balboa Park
A giant sandbox for the under-fives and a faux zip line for everyone older, under the pepper trees the grove is named for. The little-kid side has cushioned floors and slides. The big-kid side has a large jungle gym and things to spin on, with picnic tables and big fields around. The Fleet Science Center is about three minutes' walk, The Nat about five, and the Balboa Park Carousel and the miniature train under ten.
Parking is south of the Fleet Science Center, off Park Boulevard.

Sixth Avenue Playground
Banker's Hill
A fire engine for the under-fives, with ropes, slides and climbing bars built into it, and a separate area for five and up that is all obstacles and things to climb, in a futuristic style. It sits on the park's west edge at Sixth Avenue and Spruce Street, with the San Diego Zoo about 850 meters to the east.

Downtown and Barrio Logan
Waterfront Park South Playground
Downtown
Splash fountains and long lawns on both sides of the County Administration Center, with the children's play zone at the south end beside picnic areas, chess tables, bocce courts and a snack bar. The Maritime Museum of San Diego is about three minutes' walk and the USS Midway Museum about ten. The north end has an off-leash dog park, pickleball and basketball courts and table tennis, and the information booth lends out the chess sets, bocce balls and paddles.
The Green and Blue Line trolleys stop at County Center/Little Italy.

San Diego Children’s Park
Marina District
Rebuilt in 2023 on an urban-forest theme, with play equipment made for it, a lawn, a picnic area, an off-leash dog run and a walkway across the Civic Pond. The park is 1.4 acres on the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade at Island Avenue, first built in 1995, and the USS Midway Museum is about 1.1 kilometers away. The New Children’s Museum is directly to the west, so the two make one stop.

Chicano Park
Barrio Logan
A playground and a skate park under the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, among the murals that made the park a National Historic Landmark in 2016. Chicano activists founded it on April 22, 1970, and the paintings tell Mexican and Chicano history, past and present. The murals are for you, the equipment for them.
Mission Bay and Pacific Beach
Tecolote Shores South Playground
East Mission Bay
Built for accessible play, with its own comfort station. It was the second half of the city's rebuild of Tecolote Shores, after the north playground, and a lit, step-free path joins the two, about 300 meters apart. This is where we'd take a kid who uses a wheelchair or a walker.

Fanuel Street Park
Pacific Beach
Fanuel Street's play structure is new, after the 2024 king tides wrecked the old one and the park sat closed for about two years. The new structure is made of materials built to stand up to saltwater and sea air. The San Diego Parks Foundation raised the money and Zoom Recreation installed it as a donation.

Shelter Island Park South Playground
Shelter Island
The Port's playground at the south end of Shelter Island, on a park that runs a mile along the bay with a public fishing pier, fire rings, picnic tables, a bike path and the skyline across the water. La Jolla and Coronado
Kellogg Park Playground
La Jolla Shores
La Jolla Shores beach has a big grassy park behind it, and the playground is on it, near the boardwalk about 75 yards south of the lifeguard station, with lawn all around for running. The restrooms have showers, and the beach has the only beachfront boat launch in the city, so kayaks, divers and surf camps go in right there.
The lot is off Camino del Oro.
