Mission Bay or Coronado with kids: picking your San Diego base
Written October 2026
Mission Bay is a 4,235-acre park that's half water and half land, with 27 miles of shoreline and 19 of them sandy beach, and the hotels on it have beaches of their own on still water, with SeaWorld a mile up the road and Belmont Park's roller coaster at the ocean end. Coronado is across San Diego Bay, by the bridge or a 15-minute ferry: a town along Orange Avenue, a Pacific beach, and the 1888 Hotel del Coronado on it.
Mission Bay suits small kids who'll spend the week between a bay beach and a pool. Coronado suits a family that wants a town to walk and the ferry as an outing. The best family hotels in San Diego has downtown, Shelter Island and the rest.

Belmont Park is a couple of blocks away, the Maruta Gardner Playground at Bonita Cove about 0.3 km, and SeaWorld less than five minutes, by the hotel's reckoning.

Mission Bay or Coronado: how they differ
Mission Bay's hotels stand on the bay itself, so the beach is the hotel's and the water is the still kind kids launch kayaks on. SeaWorld is a mile from two of them and Belmont Park's roller coaster a couple of blocks from the Bahia.
Coronado's beach is the Pacific, and Hotel del Coronado is on it; the Marriott is on the bay by the ferry, and Loews is down the Strand with the beach across the road. The ferry from downtown's Broadway Pier takes 15 minutes, leaves every hour and takes strollers, so a kid can ride it over to the village and back.
