Family hotels near Disney World: on-site or off-site
Written October 2026
Is it worth staying on Disney property, which hotel gets you to a park without a bus, and where a family of five or six actually fits.
Stay on Disney property if the trip is mostly parks and your kids are small enough that a bus ride at the end of a long day is the hard part. Stay off it if you want a kitchen, a second bedroom and a pool with real slides, and you don't mind a shuttle or a short drive.
For a walk or monorail to Magic Kingdom, Disney's Contemporary Resort or Disney's Polynesian Village Resort. For a family of five or six without paying for a deluxe resort, Disney's Art of Animation Resort. For a kitchen and two bedrooms, Club Wyndham Bonnet Creek or Caribe Royale Orlando. For a water park on the property, Orlando World Center Marriott.
A toddler changes the math. Nap time, a stroller and a long bus queue are what wear a day down, so a short hop back to the room matters more than a big pool. The monorail and walking hotels are the ones that give you that.
How we picked
We kept to hotels in and around Walt Disney World with something a family can use: a separate bedroom, a kitchen, a water slide, a kids club or a way into a park that doesn't involve a bus. Getting-there details are the operators' own. Where a distance is ours, it is a straight line on the map.
Walk or take the monorail to a park
This is the main reason to stay on property. You skip the bus, and a tired kid is back in the room in minutes.
Disney's Contemporary Resort
Magic Kingdom side
Why we picked it: The monorail runs through the tower and a path leads to Magic Kingdom, so a toddler can be back in a real bed for a nap.
The monorail runs straight through the middle of the tower, and a walking path leads from the resort to the Magic Kingdom entrance. That makes it the easiest on-site hotel for a toddler who needs a midday nap in a real bed. Disney also runs the monorail on to Epcot with a transfer.
For room to spread out, ask about the villas at Bay Lake Tower, the Disney Vacation Club building beside the resort. The one-bedroom villas sleep five and have a full kitchen and a washer and dryer. Bay Lake Tower's own pool, with its slide and splash feature, is for guests of that building.
It's a deluxe resort, so it does not suit a family counting every dollar. A standard room is one room, so if you need a door between you and a sleeping baby, look at the villas.
Disney's own site sells the rooms and the villas.

Disney's Polynesian Village Resort
Magic Kingdom side
Why we picked it: A monorail station in the main building, and a Lava Pool with a volcano slide and a water play area for smaller kids.
The monorail station is on the second floor of the main building, with the monorail to Magic Kingdom and Epcot and a boat to Magic Kingdom too. The Lava Pool has a volcano with a water slide and a waterfall grotto, and there is a water play area for smaller kids.
Deluxe studios sleep up to five, and the over-the-water bungalows sleep up to eight (a splurge for a big group or two sets of grandparents). Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios are on the bus.
It does not suit a family that wants a kitchen in the room or a low bill. The pool is the reason to pick it over the Contemporary if your kids are more water than ride.
Disney's own site sells the rooms, studios and bungalows.

A suite or a kitchen for a bigger family or a longer stay
Five or six people in one hotel room gets old fast. These are the ones with a separate bedroom, and most have a kitchen.
Disney's Art of Animation Resort
Skyliner resort
Why we picked it: Suites themed on Finding Nemo, Cars and The Lion King that sleep six with a separate bedroom, the on-site fit for a big family.
The family suites sleep up to six, with a separate bedroom, a living area with a sleeper sofa and a table that converts to a bed, two bathrooms and a kitchenette (a microwave, sink, beverage cooler and coffee maker). Suites are themed on Finding Nemo, Cars and The Lion King.
The Disney Skyliner gondola goes to Epcot and Hollywood Studios (a transfer at Caribbean Beach may be needed). Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Disney Springs are on the bus. It's Disney's value tier, so the cheapest way to get six people on property.
It does not suit a family that wants a walk to a park, and the kitchenette is not a kitchen: no stove or oven.
Disney's own site sells the suites and standard rooms.

Club Wyndham Bonnet Creek
Bonnet Creek
Why we picked it: Two-bedroom units with a full kitchen and a washer and dryer, so bottles and laundry get done in the unit on a long stay.
The condo-style units are the answer to a kitchen near Disney. A two-bedroom deluxe has a king bed in one bedroom, two doubles in the other, a sleeper sofa in the living room, a full kitchen with a dishwasher and a washer and dryer. It's the one on this list that handles a long stay with a baby, because you can do bottles and laundry in the unit.
The resort has lazy rivers and children's water play areas. Disney's buses don't stop here. The resort runs its own shuttle to the four parks, and a car or rideshare covers the hours it doesn't.
It does not suit a family who wants to step out of the door and onto a Disney monorail.

Caribe Royale Orlando
World Center Drive
Why we picked it: Two-bedroom villas with a full kitchen, plus a waterfall pool with a 75-foot slide, for a family of five or six off property.
An all-suite resort whose two-bedroom villas have a king bedroom, a bedroom with two queens, a separate living room, a full kitchen with a dishwasher, a washer and dryer, and a screened lanai. That's the layout for a family of five or six that wants to cook breakfast and shut a door at bedtime.
There's a waterfall pool with a 75-foot water slide, a playground and an arcade. The resort runs scheduled shuttles to the Disney parks and to Disney Springs. The resort puts itself about a mile and a half from Walt Disney World, so it is a ride, not a walk.
It does not suit a family that wants a short hop back for a nap, since every park day is a shuttle.

A water park on the property
For a day off from the parks, or for kids who would pick the pool over a ride.
Orlando World Center Marriott
World Center Drive
Why we picked it: A water park with seven slides, a lazy river and a kids' splash zone, and connecting rooms that help when two families share.
The water park here is the draw: seven water slides, a lazy river and a kids' splash zone, plus a heated zero-entry lagoon pool. It's enough to fill a whole day off. Suites, connecting rooms and in-room fridges are all on offer, which helps when two families share.
The hotel runs a shuttle to the Disney parks and Disney Springs, so park days are a bus ride. It's a huge hotel, and walking from the room to the pool with a toddler on your hip takes a while.
It does not suit a family that wants a small, quiet hotel.

Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort
Golden Oak
Why we picked it: Explorer Island's lazy river and water features, and a kids club for ages 4 to 12 that gives you time to yourself, inside Walt Disney World.
The Four Seasons sits inside Walt Disney World at Golden Oak and runs motor coaches to Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. Its Explorer Island is a five-acre water playground with a lazy river and dozens of water features.
There's a kids club for ages 4 to 12, where kids can swim, craft and play while you get time to yourself. Suites are available for a family that needs more room.
It's the splurge on the list, and it does not suit a toddler under 4, who can't go to the kids club.

Off property, close to Disney Springs
The off-site pick that still feels like a Disney trip.
Wyndham Garden Lake Buena Vista Disney Springs Resort Area
Hotel Plaza Boulevard
Why we picked it: A five-minute walk over a bridge to Disney Springs, with two heated pools and an aquatic playground, for a family of four.
A bridge leads from the hotel to Disney Springs, about a five-minute walk, and the hotel runs a daily shuttle to the four Disney theme parks. It has two heated pools and an aquatic playground for younger kids.
Rooms are standard hotel rooms, with no kitchen and no separate bedroom. It's the one for a family of four who want to eat at Disney Springs and not spend on a deluxe resort.
It does not suit a family of five or more, or anyone who wants to cook.

Is it worth staying on-site?
It is worth it when the walk or monorail does real work for you: Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Polynesian Village Resort for Magic Kingdom. It is also worth it for a family of six in Art of Animation's suites. Everything else on property runs on buses, and at that point an off-site hotel with a kitchen can be the better deal for the room.
What we left out
Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, Caribbean Beach, Pop Century and Yacht Club, Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin, Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek and Holiday Inn Resort Orlando Suites - Surf & Splash Waterpark are in the directory too. The eight here are the ones that answer a specific family question. Disney's Pop Century Resort is the cheaper neighbour of Art of Animation on the same Skyliner, with rooms that sleep four.
