The best family hotels in Gainesville
Written October 2026
Where to sleep in Gainesville with kids, for a Gators weekend or a few days of springs and boardwalks, and which room to ask for.
Two kinds of trips end up in Gainesville, and they want different hotels. One is a University of Florida weekend: a campus tour, a football game, a grandparent to visit. The other is the nature trip, with boardwalks over Paynes Prairie, a sinkhole park and a drive out to the springs. Here's the catch with both: the weekend fills every room in town, and the nature trip needs a car whatever you book.
So this page sorts ten hotels by where in town you'll be sleeping. Downtown is for Depot Park and the Cade Museum. The campus edge is for the Harn and a walk to the stadium. Archer Road is the hospital and campus side, a short drive from either. And the hotels by I-75 are the ones with kitchens and a second bedroom, which is what a longer trip with kids really needs.
Each entry says what the hotel is good for, which room to ask for and what you give up. Every one of these needs a car for the springs, so don't pick one for being closer to them. Pick it for the morning routine: a pool you can reach with wet hair, a kitchen for the 6am snack, a door between two rooms.
Short on time? A rooftop pool above campus: the AC Hotel or the Holiday Inn University Center. A walk to the Harn: the Hilton UF Conference Center. A real second bedroom and a kitchen: the Residence Inn or the Homewood Suites. A cottage with grandparents along: Sweetwater Branch Inn.
How we picked
These are hotels we'd send a friend with two kids to. The facts under each one come from its own listing, its brand's page for that property and the travel sites that carry it. Where a hotel's own page wouldn't load for us, we went by what the official pages say in search. If a fact is missing, we couldn't confirm it (not that the answer is no).
We left out hotels where we couldn't find anything specific about kids or rooms, and a few where the room setup couldn't be confirmed. On a UF home game weekend every one of these books early, so reserve first and plan second.
Downtown
Stay here if the trip is Depot Park, the library and the restaurants on foot, and the campus is a short drive. Downtown is quiet on a non-game weekend and packed on a game one. What you give up: the I-75 hotels have bigger rooms for the money, and the nature stops are all a drive from here.
Hampton Inn & Suites Gainesville-Downtown
Downtown
The easy downtown base. Bo Diddley Plaza and the library are practically next door, and Union Street Station, with its shops and food, is a block away, so a tired kid isn't buckled into a car seat three times a day.
Ask for a studio suite. They add a sofa bed and a microwave, and every room has a fridge. The pool is outdoors, so think of it as an end-of-day dip rather than the reason to book.

Sweetwater Branch Inn
Downtown
The one for a group with grandparents or another couple along. Book a cottage, not a room in the main house: one sleeps six across two bedrooms and has a full kitchen, and the grounds have gardens and a putting green for the hour before dinner.
It's on the east edge of downtown, an easy walk into the middle of it. It's a bed and breakfast at heart, so it's quieter and less kid-proofed than a chain, and a good fit for older kids.

The campus edge
Two hotels with rooftop pools, a few minutes from the university. Pick this side for a UF weekend, a campus visit or an evening at the bat houses. What you give up: space. These are regular hotel rooms, not suites, and game weekends make them the hardest rooms in town to get.
AC Hotel Gainesville Downtown
Midtown, across from campus
Across University Avenue from the campus, in the lively Midtown strip of restaurants. The pool is on the rooftop with the gym, and guests say the sunset view takes in Century Tower and the stadium.
The family room is the Queen/Queen, with two queen beds, so everyone gets a bed. It's a stylish, grown-up hotel, with valet parking rather than a lot you can pull into, so with a car seat and a stroller give yourself a few extra minutes.

Holiday Inn Gainesville-University Center
West University Avenue
The rooftop pool is the point. The deck is big, open year round and has ping-pong and cornhole, so it works for a kid who needs to burn off the afternoon, and the view looks over campus.
The hotel lists doubles, family rooms and suites, so ask for a family room or a suite when you book. Every room has a microwave and a small fridge, and there's a restaurant on site for the nights nobody wants to go out. Campus and the stadium are a few minutes away by car.

Along Archer Road
Archer Road runs from the campus out to I-75, past the hospitals and the southwest corner of the university. These two are the ones for a visit built around the Harn or around a stay at UF Health. What you give up: you're nowhere near downtown, and both are a drive to the boardwalks and the springs.
Hilton University of Florida Conference Center Gainesville
UF campus
On the southwest corner of campus, across from the cultural plaza, so the Harn Museum of Art is about a three-minute walk and the Florida Museum of Natural History is close too. That makes it the best hotel in town for a campus-and-museums day with kids.
There's an outdoor pool and hot tub, and a steakhouse on site. The rooms are standard hotel rooms, so for a family of four check what the room sleeps when you book. The bat houses are a short drive.

Home2 Suites by Hilton Gainesville Medical Center
Southwest 13th Street
The practical one. Every suite is a studio or a one-bedroom with a full kitchen, with a full-size fridge and freezer, a dishwasher and a microwave, so dinner and the leftovers happen in the room. Connecting rooms are available, which helps if you need a second room next door.
Breakfast is included, there's an outdoor pool and a laundry room that doubles as the gym (so you can do swim clothes while someone else runs on the treadmill). It's right next to the university and the hospitals.

Near I-75
These are the hotels for a longer stay or a bigger group, and the best bet if you're driving in from Orlando, Jacksonville or Tampa. You get a real second bedroom, a kitchen, a courtyard and an easy highway ramp. What you give up: they're a drive from everything, including campus, and the nights are quiet in the way a business park is quiet.
Residence Inn by Marriott Gainesville I-75
SW 40th Boulevard
The two-bedroom suite is the room to book. It sleeps up to six, with a king in one bedroom, a queen in the other, a sofa bed in the living room, a full kitchen and two bathrooms. A kid can go down at 7pm and you aren't sitting in the dark.
Breakfast is included, there's an outdoor pool, a putting green and a patio with a grill and fire pit. It's about two miles to campus, off Archer Road at the highway.

Homewood Suites by Hilton Gainesville
SW 42nd Street
Much the same idea as the Residence Inn, a few blocks over. The suites are studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom, with full-size fridges, ovens, dishwashers and cookware, and a hot breakfast is served every day. There are courtyard grills by the outdoor pool.
It's a couple of miles from campus. Pick whichever of the two has the room you want on the night you need it.

Staybridge Suites Gainesville I-75
SW 40th Boulevard
The biggest rooms on the list: a two-bedroom suite with a king and two queens sleeps eight, with a full kitchen. That's the one for two kids and two sets of grandparents.
The laundry room is on site and there's an outdoor pool with a whirlpool, in a quiet back courtyard. It opened in 2018, so everything is newer than the hotels around it.

Best Western Gateway Grand
Northwest, I-75 at Santa Fe College
The one on the other side of town, by Santa Fe College, so it's the closest hotel to the teaching zoo and the planetarium, about ten minutes by car to the zoo. It's right off the highway, so it's also the easy stop on a drive through.
Breakfast is included and there's an outdoor pool with a hot tub. Every room has a fridge and a microwave. The hotel has five suites, so if you want one, book early. Campus and downtown are a real drive away.

A UF football weekend
Gator home games fill every hotel in town, and the best ones go first. Book as soon as the schedule is out, and book on the side of town you plan to be on, because the roads around the stadium and downtown back up. If you can't get a room near campus, the hotels along I-75 are your fallback, and a car is a must.
The springs and the prairie
Paynes Prairie, Boulware Springs, Devil's Millhopper and Kanapaha Gardens are all on the south side, and the springs out toward High Springs are a longer drive. None of these hotels is walking distance to any of it. If the nature trip is the plan, the I-75 hotels and Archer Road put you on the right side of town.
