The best family hotels at Lake Tahoe
Written October 2026
Where to sleep at Lake Tahoe with kids, which room to ask for, and which shore fits the trip you're planning.
Here's the thing about Lake Tahoe: it's 72 miles around, and the hotel you pick decides which part of it you actually see. Sleep on the South Shore and the gondola, the busy beaches and the restaurants are a walk. Sleep up by Tahoe City or Incline Village and you get the quieter north side, with a drive to everything else. Sleep near Truckee and, in winter, the snow is outside your door. The best family hotels at Lake Tahoe are the ones that match the trip you came for.
Plenty of Tahoe lodging takes kids, which doesn't tell you much. So this page looks at six listed hotels on what decides the booking: a kitchen or a separate sleeping area, beds that fit four, a pool, and what's actually close. Each one says which room to ask for and what you give up.
It's sorted by shore, since that's the real choice. The South Shore is the easy base for the plan in our 3 days at Lake Tahoe itinerary. The North Shore and Truckee are for a quieter trip, or a snow one.
Short on time? Beds for four and a gondola at the door: Basecamp. A suite with a separate living room: Margaritaville. A kitchen and a heated pool without leaving the budget behind: Stardust Lodge. Wading pool and a sled hill: Granlibakken.
How we picked
These are hotels we'd send a friend with kids to. The facts under each one come from its own site, and from its Play Day listing. Where a hotel's own pages wouldn't load for us, we went by what those official pages say in search. If a fact is missing, we couldn't confirm it (not that the answer is no).
We left out a ski-in, ski-out timeshare near Northstar, because it's set up for owners and we couldn't confirm that a regular family can book it like a hotel.
The South Shore
Stay here if the trip is beaches, the Heavenly gondola and dinner you can walk to. The three below sit along Lake Tahoe Boulevard near the Nevada line, so the gondola is close and the beaches are a short drive. What you give up: it's the busy part of the lake, with casinos just over the state line and traffic on the main road in summer.
Basecamp Hotel
South Shore
The one for a family of four who'd rather not share a bed. Ask for a Family room: two queen beds with two twin loft bunks overhead, so everybody gets their own spot, and the kids will fight over the bunks, not the pillows.
There's a fire pit out back with the makings for s'mores set out in the evening, which pretty much plans the end of your day for you. The hotel puts the gondola and the lake both within a short walk.
Margaritaville Resort Lake Tahoe
South Shore
The one for a door you can close. Every room is a suite with a separate living area, and there are two-bedroom suites too, so once the kids are down you're not sitting in the dark. Book it if you'd rather not have the whole family in one room.
The pool is indoors and heated year-round, with a hot tub, so a smoky or snowy afternoon still has a plan. The resort says it's steps from the Heavenly gondola, so day one of the itinerary can end at your own door. It's a big, busy resort with a lot of restaurants, which is handy and a little loud.

Stardust Lodge
South Shore
The practical pick. Every room has a kitchenette, so breakfast and the milk are handled, and the One-Bedroom Suite is the one to ask for, since you get a separate bedroom. It's an older motor-lodge style property, not a resort, and that's the point.
The heated pool is open year-round, and there's a hot tub and laundry on site. The lodge hands out sleds and snowshoes in season, which is a fun surprise on a winter trip. The gondola is close, but check the map when you book.

The North Shore and Truckee
Pick this side for quieter beaches, Tahoe City, Sand Harbor and, in winter, the snow. From here the South Shore is an hour or more around the lake, so you're choosing one half of the trip. What you give up: fewer places to walk to, and you'll want a car.
Granlibakken Tahoe
Tahoe City
A woodsy resort up in the trees, about a mile from the lake, and a good base for day three of the itinerary or a whole winter weekend. It has studios with full kitchens and two-bedroom townhomes, so look at those if there are four or more of you.
Besides a heated lap pool and hot tub there's a separate wading pool, which is the one little kids will actually use. In winter the groomed sled hill is right on the grounds, and there are kids' programs. You're not on the water here, so plan a short drive to the beach.

Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino
Incline Village
The easy resort on the north side, with beach access and a seasonal kids' pool for the warm months. Scavenger hunts and movie nights run for kids, and it's a short drive to Sand Harbor.
It does have a 24-hour casino on the property. Most of that stays out of your way, but it's worth knowing if you're expecting a quiet lodge. The Hyatt Regency also lists family rooms, so ask for one.

- Yes, heated
The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe
Truckee
The snow splurge. It's the only ski-in, ski-out hotel here with a gondola link to Northstar, and the lake is about a fifteen-minute drive. That makes it a mountain trip first and a beach trip second.
There are two heated outdoor pools, a game room and Topgolf Swing Suites, plus family programming. For a bigger group, the resort has residences with up to four bedrooms, so ask about those instead of two rooms.

Summer or winter
Pick the hotel for the season. In summer you want the lake within a short walk or drive, so the South Shore hotels and the Hyatt Regency make sense. In winter the snow is the trip: Granlibakken has its own sled hill, Stardust Lodge lends sleds and snowshoes, and the Ritz-Carlton is ski-in, ski-out. For what to do from each base, see our 3 days at Lake Tahoe itinerary at 3 days at Lake Tahoe.
Driving and roads
Tahoe is a car trip, and in winter either road in can need chains or close for snow, so look at conditions before you go. Once you're there the lake road is mostly one lane each way, and beach parking fills early on summer days. Whichever shore you pick, plan your beach time for the morning.
