The best family hotels in San Jose and Santa Clara
Written October 2026
Where to sleep in San Jose and Santa Clara with kids, which room to ask for, and which hotels are really built for a family weekend.
Let's be honest about Silicon Valley hotels: most of them are business hotels. They were built for people with laptops and a conference badge, and the lobby shows it. The good news is that the same hotels run half empty on weekends, and a business hotel with a big pool, a two-room suite and a parking lot is, it turns out, pretty great with kids.
So this page picks the nine that hold up. Some have a pool you'll actually want to spend an afternoon at. Some have a kitchen or a second room with a door. One is a historic estate with a lawn. Each one says what you give up, too, because the biggest trade in this area is simple: you're either downtown with the museums, or by Great America with the theme park, and you can't be both.
It's sorted by where you sleep. Downtown San Jose is for the Children's Discovery Museum and The Tech. Santa Clara by Great America is for the park and Levi's Stadium. North San Jose is for suites with kitchens. South San Jose is for space. Everywhere except downtown, you'll want a car.
Short on time? Walk to the museums: the Signia. A pool you can swim laps in and a short walk to the theme park: the Santa Clara Marriott. Two rooms with a door between them: the Embassy Suites. A kitchen: Hyatt House or Homewood Suites. Room to run: Hayes Mansion.
How we picked
These are hotels we'd send a friend with two kids to. The facts under each hotel come from its own site, its brand's page for that property (where we could load it) and its Play Day listing. Where a hotel's own pages wouldn't load for us, we went by what those official pages say in search. If a fact is missing, we couldn't confirm it (not that the answer is no).
We left out hotels where we couldn't confirm anything family-specific, and we didn't list a hotel's cribs, breakfast or pool from the usual brand layout. Our itinerary 3 days in San Jose has a couple more places to stay, including near the airport.
Downtown San Jose, for the museums
Stay here and day one is on foot: the Children's Discovery Museum and The Tech are a few blocks apart, and the light rail runs through. What you give up: it's a convention hotel in a city center, and the freeway trips to Great America or Happy Hollow are all by car.
Signia by Hilton San Jose
Downtown San Jose
The stay-where-you-play pick. The pool is on the rooftop (the fourth floor, really, with palms and a view of downtown and the hills), and The Tech Interactive is about a five-minute walk from the front door.
It's a big full-service hotel, so it has family rooms, and connecting rooms are available. The signature suites can be booked on their own or connected, which is the setup for four or five people. Ask when you book, since connecting rooms depend on the dates.
Our 3 days in San Jose itinerary starts with a morning at the Children's Discovery Museum, which is an easy walk from here: 3 days in San Jose

Santa Clara and Great America
If the trip is California's Great America, Levi's Stadium or a game, sleep here. A cluster of big hotels sits within a short walk of the park, and the weekend rates are the best value in the valley. What you give up: it's offices and parking lots, with not much to walk to except the park.
Santa Clara Marriott
Santa Clara
The pool pick. The hotel bills it as the largest outdoor pool in Silicon Valley, with a lap lane and cabanas around it. Great America is a short walk from the lobby.
Interconnected rooms are available, so if you need two rooms, ask for them when you book.

Hilton Santa Clara
Santa Clara
The easiest base if the theme park or the stadium is the point of the trip: it sits next to Levi's Stadium and Great America, across from the convention center. There's a heated outdoor pool and hot tub.
The rooms come as two queens or a king with a sofa bed, and each has a mini-fridge. So a family of four fits in one room, just not roomily.

Hyatt Regency Santa Clara
Santa Clara
Right across the street from Great America. The heated outdoor pool is open all year, with a whirlpool and two fire pits (a warm-ish evening swim in the off season is the move).
We couldn't confirm connecting rooms or suite layouts, so ask what it can do for your group when you book.

Avatar Hotel Santa Clara, Tapestry Collection by Hilton
Santa Clara
The most playful of the Great America hotels, and less business-hotel than its neighbors. The pool area has cabanas and a fire pit, though the hotel's page showed a pool maintenance notice when we looked, so check it is open before you count on it. And Great America and Levi's Stadium are both about 0.6 miles away.
Pets are welcome, which is useful if the dog is coming too. The hotel's site doesn't say much about room layouts, so check before you book if you need a suite.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Santa Clara Silicon Valley
Santa Clara
Two rooms with a door between them, and that's the point. The bedroom has a king or two doubles, and the living room has a sofa bed. Kids get one room, you get the other.
Every suite has a fridge and microwave. There's an indoor pool, so swimming works in winter, and breakfast is cooked to order every morning. It's the pick if you want a real second room more than a view.

North San Jose, for a kitchen
Two suite hotels on the San Jose and Santa Clara line, between the freeways. You're about ten minutes from Great America and a drive from downtown. What you give up: no walking anywhere. What you get: a kitchen for the whole stay.
Hyatt House San Jose
North San Jose
All suites, each with a full kitchen: a full-size fridge, a stovetop, a microwave and cookware, plus a separate living area with a sleeper sofa. There's a heated outdoor pool open all year, with firepits and a grill area, and Great America is close.
This is the practical one for a stay of three nights or more. Bring groceries and skip two restaurant dinners.

Homewood Suites by Hilton San Jose-Santa Clara
North San Jose
One- and two-bedroom suites, every one with a full kitchen and a living area. Ask for the two-bedroom if you're four or more, since it gives you a closing door.
Breakfast is a hot buffet each morning, and there's a year-round outdoor pool. The hotel will do a grocery run for you. It's about two miles from Levi's Stadium and ten minutes from Great America.

South San Jose, for room to run
The south side is the quiet end of the city, and it's close to day three of our San Jose itinerary (the canyon, the lake and the splash pad). Downtown is a short drive north. What you give up: it isn't near the theme park.
Hayes Mansion San Jose, Curio Collection by Hilton
South San Jose
The splurge, and the only one here with a lawn. It's a historic estate on 20 acres, with a swimming pool, croquet and lawn games, and landscaped grounds to wander before bedtime.
The hotel has rooms and suites, but its site doesn't say how many people they sleep, so ask. Also know that it hosts weddings and events, so weekends can be dressy.

Which hotels have a pool
Every hotel on this page lists one. The Embassy Suites in Santa Clara is the indoor one, which matters from about November to March. The rest are outdoor: the Signia's is on the rooftop, and the Santa Clara Marriott bills its as the biggest. Check the hotel's page for pool hours and maintenance closures before a pool trip.
Suites, kitchens and connecting rooms
A kitchen: Hyatt House and Homewood Suites. A second room with a door: the Embassy Suites, plus the two-bedroom suites at Homewood. Connecting rooms to ask for: the Signia and the Santa Clara Marriott.
Do you need a car
Mostly yes. Only downtown is walkable, and even there Happy Hollow and Kelley Park are a drive. Parking is often charged by the night at the bigger hotels, so look at the hotel's page. Our guide to things to do in San Jose with kids is at Things to do in San Jose with kids.
Questions
Where should we stay in San Jose with kids?
Downtown, at the Signia, if the trip is the Children's Discovery Museum and The Tech, since you can walk to both. Santa Clara, by Great America, if the trip is the theme park. South San Jose, at Hayes Mansion, if you want space and a lawn.
Which San Jose hotels have a pool for kids?
All nine hotels on this page list one (check the Avatar's is open). The Signia has a rooftop pool downtown. The Santa Clara Marriott bills its pool as the largest outdoor one in Silicon Valley, with cabanas, and the Embassy Suites in Santa Clara has an indoor pool.
Which San Jose hotels have kitchens or connecting rooms?
Hyatt House and Homewood Suites have a full kitchen in every suite. The Embassy Suites has two-room suites. The Signia and the Santa Clara Marriott list connecting rooms, so ask when you book.
Which hotels are closest to Great America?
The Hyatt Regency is across the street, and the Hilton Santa Clara and Santa Clara Marriott are a short walk. Avatar is about 0.6 miles away.
Are Silicon Valley hotels good with kids?
Honestly, they're business hotels, so the lobbies feel like it. But on weekends they have big pools, suites and parking, which is most of what a family needs.
